Dreaded engine vibrations!

bugger I get my predator mount on Monday, I was afraid it was going to be a lot of coin for minimal improvement. Oh well I'll fit it up and see how it goes. Incidentally when I purchased the bike new a few months ago I was going to whack on a True Track but when I spoke to the HD place up north in Queensland that sells them he said "man you don't need it, its a 2014 model, HD sorted it on the 14 models" I really appreciated his honesty as he did himself out of a 500 dollar sale, but what is the difference between my Dyna and a say 2012 model apart from cosmetics?
And how come a Street Glide is sooooo smooth with the same motor as ours a 103? I know its mounted differently so why not do that on the street bob fat bob etc.?

So it's been fitted for almost 2 months I figure it either doesn't work (and the manufacturer doesn't want you to share this information) or it works brilliantly and you've been out clocking up the kms.

    Which is it?

Any other positive reviews out there yet ?
I replaced my "new" HD mount the other day as it had sagged
After a year or so. Put the old mount back in, and it
    Improved the vibration straight away.

Yeah well Ive had the predator front mount in for the last week or so. When I first installed it and then started the bike I could feel straight away there was a slight improvement with the vibration, but I have to stress "slight" improvement, and it does feel very slightly smoother when riding. Is it worth the 4 hundy? well that's very subjective, might be to some not to others. For me, nah not really, its probably worth about 150 bucks for the improvement it gives. Its gotta out last what? three OEM front mounts to pay for its self? we'll see.....

I'm still a believer in resetting the front mount so it has no stretch. Done it on two fxd's and the mirrors are smooth at idle once it's hot. It's a three dollar fix. Loosen, don't remove, the front mount bolts and see how much the motor pulls back. Make up spacers to that thickness, put in new bolts that are longer by the spacer thickness and try it. It still vibes between 28/32 revs but is very smooth outside of that range. Also loosen and re tighten the pipes / mufflers when you do this, so there is no tension on the mounts.  If there is no gap after you first loosen the bolts, yer fucked....LOL...

Hello folks. Just new to the forum, but joined up because of this thread. I've a late model (98/99) evo engined bike with the dreaded vibes. Fitted one of the new Vibra-Technic mounts (sold here under the name Predator), but sad to say didn't do much for me either. I did notice a bit of a change in the nature and perhaps frequency of the vibes, but it still shudders like a jackhammer on the overrun in the 50-40mph range in top. Perfect once you hit the magic 52mph, and silky smooth all the way up from there, a really nice bike to ride in fact, but awful below that.

Since then, have had the bike with a local Indy mechanic who found the starter motor cable was wedged soild between the motor and the battery box, effectively making a solid link between the back of the engine and the frame, but even with that fixed it still shudders like hell. Next step I guess will be to go back and check all of the motor mounts thoroughly, and take a closer look at everything that connects the engine to the frame like the service bulletin suggests. Unless there's any other magic bullets out there ?

(As an aside, I dont have a rev counter on the bike - a standard 99 FXD Superglide: can anybody tell me what the engine revs are at 40 and 50 mph ? Thanks ,Alan)

That's interesting on the bars - I have a set of mini apes which seem to amplify the vibration the further along each bar you go. I had thought about putting on a flat set of bars, or something with a brace across the two sides to see if that would help, or even just bunging a rolled up off cut of lead sheeting into the bar ends to see if it would do anything to change the resonance in the bars. Would never have imagined a full blown set of 16" apes would have helped.

That's starting to sound very logical and scientific LuckyLick - i like your style :)

One thing I've been struggling with and I'd appreciate any thoughts from you guys is whether there's any way to distinguish if the shudder is mainly down to the engine mounting system(s) and general engine/exhaust/frame/mount fit or just a lousy engine build with out of balance crank, flywheels etc ? Mine runs silky smooth once the revs are up (c. 2200/2300 upwards?) which makes me think the engine can't be that bad, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

The online advice seems to suggest the only way to tell for sure be to pull the pushrods and remove the cover and cam gears to measure the runout on the end of the crank, but I know with my half *rsed spannering skills that's going to turn into a major job :) Are there any other pointers which would tell you if the engine itself was running way out of spec ?

FFS Guys I can't belive what I am reading here.  Yep a new member and a new Dyna owner - 2010 Street Bob 96". Sorry to open with this but get a grip...

I have shuddery vibrations at the 2000-2200 rpm mark which is annoying and totally ridiculous on an expensive bike in the modern age. I accept this as it is part of the HD 'thing' and outside this range it is as smooth as.  I enjoy the industrial / tractor quality of HD's 'Harley John Derevisons' and that's why you buy them & why I bought mine.  Queerky and different.

    2 suggestions:

    1. If your Dyna is outside this normal range (there seems a lot of you) then you have a dud. Sell it and get a new one. From these posts and sad saga's you are fightig a loosing balttle and will spend your lives trying to fix it - why?

    2. If your bike is in the normal Dyna unbalanced motor range & you don't like it the then don't own a Dyna. Sell it and move on. Buy a balanced motor or a Triumph (way superior engineering) and have zero vibration at any revs / speed.

    Cheers,

    Sarge.
