Carb vs efi

    Here we go,

     what's everyone's opinion.

the reason I ask is because I've owned both and honestly hate my HD with efi.

i am now gathering the required bits to change it to a carby bike.

    but,technically,efi should be superior.

i like the intake noise of a big carby, the idle, the mechanical aesthetics and I think it gives the rider more feel for the bike, more connected to the bike I think.

    cheers,

I was not keen on EFI to start ,

but after playing with a PCIII and maps id hate to spend hours stuffing around with jets and BS,

EFI is so much easier to do.

    Carby.

I like to believe there's half a chance I could fix a problem with a carby, especially on the roadside, EFI......not much chance, I think.

Should qualify that and say I've never had a bike with EFI although my van is EFI and haven't had any dramas with that. And in retrospect, I wasn't too keen on electronic ignition either.....thinkin' I might be a bit of a troglodyte...

All cars in the UK were fuel injection since the very early 90's at the latest. Many since the mid 80's ( I lived there until 1995 )

Emissions driven reasons , but performance increased as well.

I noticed a huge rise in reliability and improved fuel consumption

Australian buyers were " Fuel injection resistant " , especially on Harleys, hence the continuing large number of carby Harleys here until 2006/7

The yanks HAD to have EFI since 2001/2 I do believe , and there it was relatively trouble free.

I had to " re-learn" EFI , and now would have nothing else personally, it's just a learning curve

What model is CVohhh trying to retrofit a carburettor to ?

I'm happy with my old tube frame Buell with cv44. Never touch it, when it starts to run out of fuel I reach downturn it onto reserve I know I have 2.5L of fuel left. I like having a petcock.

but if your happy with your EFI good for you, but why do you need to play with maps? I don't touch my carb at all. I checked plugs tune was great never hesitates when I open throtle the sky is in front of me.

so please explain to me if your EFI is perfect why do you need to load different maps?

but to custom map EFI takes all dayas you have to tune it at all the throtle positions, otherwise...

my car EFI & it's good I never play with maps with my car just drive& just ride the bike but heck it's tight

    Don't really care with cars.

If I was interested I'd buy a Ford Thunderbird.

But I can't afford one, so my old 83/84 Evo Softy with S&S Carby is  fine.

    Not into New Age Bikes.

Those that have ridden the older Harley's seem to know where I am coming from.
Efi is great, reliable easy starting but seems to take away the character of old.

    Well I think you're taking on a "Mega-task" mate . good onya

The earliest EFI Harleys (up to 2000 by Magnetti Marelli ) were well enough retrofitted to carby running

Complete parts lists can be found on the net to do them

The 2011 bikes will be a piece of work , as every fucking thing is in the ECM and assorted loom

Will be interesting to see how you go

On a slightly different note , a guy in my suburb has just fitted a 120R motor into a 2004 carby Fatboy which seemed to go OK

He told me it was not common , but straightforward enough. Just a honking big carby of course !!

    I agree solid54.
Efi is great and reliable, far less troublesome than a carby IMHO.
But,I want a challenge, change and bring some character back into my ride.
Just waiting for parts to arrive from all over the globe, rebuild and detail some stuff,n
When it's done I'll post some pics n a bit of a blow by blow account of the whole ordeal.

    Ok,still gathering parts.
I have a NOS 32mm twin throat weber(made in Bologna).
These things are like rocking horse shit,I've searched high n low n can't find another.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a company in sth east Melbourne that is capable of fabricating
    A custom intake manifold?

I know for a fact that I can tune a carb quicker than I can tune EFI.
    But that's me,Fucking hopeless with computers.lol

If you want a bike with old school character, why not ditch your bike altogether and get an older one. Might be less stuffing around in the long run

Yes Beagle,I like a manual choke,I also prefer the idle and induction noise that only a carb can provide.
    I don't dislike EFI,it's technically fantastic.Its just not for me.cheers

I agree with ya there.Gotta love the diagnostics feature of EFI.
And I got RACV total care.If I breakdown I call them,if I'm a fair way from home,I get a free rental car n motel room.and a tow for the bike.
