Horses for courses. When it comes to Harleys, I like analogue. My Evo Softy had a modified Keihin carby and points ignition, with a voltmeter added to catch malfunctioning stators/regulators before they ate the battery. The carby was modded according to an article in Easyriders which entailed removal of the choke plate, unnecessary in NQ, addition of a higher volume accelerator pump from older model, opening of old sealed gallery in float bowl and sealing of newer one, and better alignment of accelerator pump jet. No more farting and stalling when blipping throttle down through gears. The accelerator pump squirted more fuel, into both cylinders instead of just the rear as before, and refilled instantly. Worked better than my mate's identical bike with Mikuni. Cost $27 in parts. Can't remember if I actually changed jets at the time, probably did. Went to points when electronic ignition started playing up on a run to Brisbane, it'd cough and fart, die, then come back to life every dozen or so kms. The wires and connections on the timing plate were corroded almost to powder. Benefit from points was a much more consistent and lower idle, replaced points and condenser once a year after that. No hassle at all. I like EFI on my Triumph, easy to change tunes, only needed to do so twice. Diagnostics and tuning on the lappie. Valve jobs much more involved...
