What is available to lift the engine in and out of the frame?  Or do you use a few mates and good old fashioned muscle.

I use some vinyl flooring cut in a strip about 3" wide zip tied to the frame to prevent damage.
Remove every thing that looks in the way and then remove a lot more.
Can be done alone but a mate makes it easy.
You can use 2 bit of 70x19 x 900 HW flooring and 2 lengths of threaded rod. 1 behind rear cylinder 1 in front of front cylinder. fit below the exhaust studs. It will be a little wobbly but 1 guy each side and it's an easy lift

Easy one man job using a block and tackle, and a steel plate bolted between the head breathers.
Well that's on a Dyna at least !

    Bashfull,
I just swapped out an 88 and ut a 103 in.
The 103 was from a bike registered in Vic and I am in NSW.
I had no issues just had to supply the invoice for the engine, also had an invoice from dealer who fitted for me (Although dont think I really needed) and all my NSW rego details.
Needed to get blue slip and advise the insurers of the change but all went smooth.
Only potential issue is putting too big an engine in, I think NSW max is 15 or 18% larger capacity, but would need to check.
To put a 96 back in a 96 should be a breeze all things being equal.

I would love to see a photo from the other side. Do you have to remove the clutch, primary chain and primary case as the service manual suggests.

YES. inner Primary needs to come off so you can get to the rear mounting bolts, and so you can get the alternator off because most of the time they don't come off through the opening.

Well, that was easier than I thought. All I had to do was lift the gear box out and then lean the top of the engine out of the frame first and then grab a good hold and a deep breathe and lift it out. 1 down, 2 more to go. Done, thanks for your help fella's.
