Softail Primary Cover Noise - Opened Up and found some Chain Wear...ideas?

    Hi Brainstrust,

Bike: 2008 Softail/Nightrain, 12,000kms, Stage 1 A/C, V&H Big Radius pipes, stock engine. Fluids, appox. 2,000kms (prob less).

On the last 10 minutes of my ride home today I noticed a metallic sound coming from the Primary side of the engine. Mainly occured when I wrapped the throttle on. Drained oil, removed primary cover and found noticable wear marks on the inner primary cover (refer photo). The chain tensior appears to be moving in and out when I apply pressure to the top of the chain.

Any ideas, where to? Is this chain slap?

    Cheers

    how many klms ??
but looks like it might be a bit stretched due to the wear the chain is the only thing in the area that could ,make that mark and the only brand of chain I have ever used and have faith in is a Diamond chain would check for wear on the tensioner as well

    Cheers Ratty.
Odometer reads 12,500kms. Shouldn't the automatic chain tensioner take up the stretch?

Can you manually push the tension forward to take up the slack? Minimal wear on chain tension guide.

yes you can push the tensioner to get the slack out.  I ended up getting the Hayden M7 Tensioner.  Heaps better than the OEM...  You will find that the tensioner doesn't keep the correct tension on the chain causing the chain to slap against the inside of the top of the cover.  The way to adjust is to cause the tensioner to jump up another notch or so by;  Ride the bike till up to temp... Especially the primary.  From a starting stop hard accel to about 60kph in 1st gear.  Do not engage the clutch then decel and hard on the rear brake (don't lock up the rear wheel).  The aim is to make the chain tight on accell then when it decels the chain will slacken up and the tensioner will jump to the next notch.  Do this a couple of times and it will take the slack out of the chain.

The only problem I believe is that it places a lot of strain on the chain as it cools down and contracts and possibly damaging the inner seal and bearing...  Replace the stock tensioner with the Hayden M7.  No more chain slap and there is constant tesnion on the chain at all times...

Thanks for replies, can't seem to find info on the M7? Found the M6 BT07 which suits my engine.
Do we know of any Australian distributors?

http://www.haydensm6.com/m6_bt07.htm. This is for the 07 and up bikes and 06 dyna's. I bought mine through M%M Cycles in the US. I don't know if there is an Australian distributer.
