reflashed ecm because tune getting worse

Hi all...Ive been reading on these boards how the tune slowly degenerates in time on the modern Harleys.

I felt my bike was slowly getting worse,A little less throttle response,A little more burbbleing out the exhaust when off the throttle at low rpm.And just feeling a little sluggish. So i got out the powervision and reflashed the ecm with the custom tune the dyno tuner made for the bike,Only took a few minutes and was all done.

I took the bike for a good run and i felt the bike run better instantly.crisp throttle response, smoother, more power and less burbble out the exhaust when off the throttle at low revs.I think i mite reflash the tune every service from now on.

BTW,My bike only has a cam, breather, slipons and powervision. So its a very basic engine.I would imagine the more serious engines would need the reflash more often.

Pretty sure this has something to do with the stock O2 sensors not getting correct readings once mods and exhaust flow has been increased.

Most people either get the bungs in the pipes machined down to put the sensor more into the flow or change the map to run in open loop to bypass the sensor readings.

if you are happy with how it runs across the full range and the fuel economy plug the PV back in and turn off the 02's, other wise just reflash every once in a while

I would first check for a manifold and exhaust leak as this could screw the tune. Like above it could be the 02 sensors screwing up the tune with the free flowing mufflers. It could also be one or both of the 02 sensors starting to deteriorate from age. There so many posabilites its hard to help with a fix but are you running 12mm, 18mm, narrow or wide band sensors on the PV. What year bike and model ? does it still have the cat mounted in the headers as this would reduce exhaust flow and help the sensors get a better reading.

Hi all...The bike is a fatboy low 2011 with about 22000klm and the cams and powervision ect were done when the bike had about a 1000klm.

The bike runs quite good and always has.The fuel economy isn't the best,i doubt I could get 300klm from a tank if I tried my hardest,250klm a tank is about it with the way I ride.

Im pretty sure she has no exhaust leaks. As for the o2 sensors, they are just the stock ones. The cat was in the stock slipons and I removed that exhaust butterfly valve as well.

Turning off the 02 sensors with the powervision?I wouldn't has a clue how to do it.Oneday maybe LOL.

read the manual, go to flasmyharley.com
    or
    program vehicle/quick tune/config
it's the same place they turned off your active exhaust and active intake

The fuel economy indicates your tune needs more work and decent tuner should be able to shut down the closed loop where its affecting your tune. That being said you only have few options left to fix the problem like Ozymax said above to run open loop or fix the depth and maybe location of the 02 bungs. I had to do this a few times to get it right on my road rage exhaust. I tried the bosch spec first but discovered they where still not getting a decent sample at low revs because of the location. I went the same way Hilly went with the bungs not angled just sunk in as deep as I could go with out the 02 sensor thread entering the pipe.

Hey guys, I thought that a custom dyno tune with a PV tuner was done in open loop and a map created with the stock 02 sensors no longer used to relay info to the ECM... Is that right?

Hi all...My bike has reverted back to its old ways real quick. When I get a chance I will switch it to open loop,Seems the easiest option for the time being.

What that is telling you is something is NOT right. Before just switching the tune to open loop do yourself a favor and double check everything. Sure would hate to see you switch them off and it had another issue that cost you more in the long run. As long as everything else is good then switching the system to open loop operation would be OK as long as you understand your NOT fixing it, only covering up the problem.
