V&H Short Shots & Power

I Have a 2013 Fatbob, when I first got the bike I was impressed with the low down power (stock exhaust) compared to my old Fatboy, both are 103's, I then changed the air in intake SE stage 1 & exhaust with V&H short shots. Not happy with the loss of power,,,much noise but no go !!!

I think they are too loud anyway, I was thinking about installing SE slip-ons or something else that would give the bike it’s best performance, I’m not that concerned about the bike being loud, but a better then stock sound with that good old HD rumble,,, any throughs ???

Have the bike properly dyno tuned and you wont notice much difference down low but gain more uptop.

Your loss of power is probably due to the baffles - the open flow design loses torque. A set of lollypops (or better yet, thunder torque inserts) should fix that issue - I think the quiet baffle is closed off too so they would get the low to mid running right again.

None of that will (probably) fix the sound (though it will change it) but that's a matter of choice. A lower rumble usually means no baffles = louder pipes = equals less torque...

But check out other bikes pipes because it's all a matter of choice - plenty of people love the sound of your setup - plenty of others (me included) don't..

Most people know that short shots aren't the best performance pipe but I like mine and with decent baffles and a good tune they can come up pretty good. I'm getting 96/114 from my mild 106, stock heads..

Where is the catalytic converter on a Fatbob the age of your's ?

On the switchback Dynas it's in the 2:1 part as with all recent touring bikes

If it's not in your headers , and you piss off just the stock OEM mufflers and fit freeflow slip-ons you'll be delighted

"Best bang for the buck " that way , always was

S&S , Khromewerks , Rush Racing are all good. The S&S have it embossed into them sadly , and the coppers are onto that ( here in the west at least !)

The Cat on the fat bob is in where the header pipes merge into one .

All Aussie spec bikes have had Catalytic Converters since 2007 at the very latest

Softails and (most) Dynas have them in the stock OEM mufflers , so as soon as you remove them the cats are gone

All the recent touring bikes have the cats in the merged headers in the 2 into 1 into 2 part

Several of my mates here in Perth have had these removed in the last month . Streetglides and Ultras

They found a "handy" welder who can cut and shut the headers and grind out the cat matrix , a real neat job !

Youtube has several " how-to " videos from the US where the exhausts are the same or very similar

I have stock headers and screamin eagle slip ons. I like the look and the sound but if you modify the the air flow you really need to get it dyno tuned. Mine was done and the bike runs great, oh I did put a set of cams in as well. :)
