Compensator Nut - The complicator!! Calling EVO builders..........HELP?

    Hi guys,

After taking a dodgy sick day today to finish pulling down the Dyna; I ran into a massive problem with the compensator nut.  In short, I cant get the fucking thing off!! I have read through the manual about 14,000 times and ran through the process they've provided an equal amount.  The only change I can see that I've made was to take the chain tensioner completely out becaue it was in the way and I couldn't use a locking bar with it there.

So, I cut a locking bar out of 5mm steel to wedget between the compensator sprocket teeth and the clutch teeth and in the end it bent.  I tried using a block of wood, it fell apart and I have a mate coming round tomorrow with a block of solid nylon that we're going to cut into that little stair shaped locking tool.

Can anyone give me a hand on this; I cant for the life of me work out where I am going wrong and its the last piece in the puzzle before I can disemble the primary and remove the engine?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Thanks gents, I made a locking bar today out of 5mm steel but it didn't quite work. I'm thinking I need to apply the heat and try and loosen it that way. I'm going to give Rollies a call first thing to buy a proper locking tool and try again later in the week. I've been reading the manual again and I've followed the steps to the letter but no success, will definitely try heat; just need to pick up a blow torch.

This is what I use, but I had to fine tune the length.  220mm worked for my Dyna, but you may need to fine tune it.

Not a chance in hell I could bend it ?

I just wedge a piece of wood in between the gear and chain...always works. Mind you the wood is buggered by the end..lol

A peice of broom handle cut to length will do the trick and I have used it a few times now. When I changed over to the SE Comp the nut was very hard to take off. I used a cheater bar on the end of a long handled socket... It came loose in the end. And it is a Normal thread

Yep a bit of rag or wood made to fit, long pipe on 3/4" breaker bar - there's no substitute for leverage
but yeah a bit of heat if needed, red loctite is strong gear, heat will dissolve it

Thanks again guys, I ordered a actual tool (looks like a set of plastic steps) and will use a chunk of wood to chock up the other side. Spoke to a bloke yesterday about it and he reckons chock both sides and you'll be fine.

    Guys,

Just want to say a huge thank you for all of your help; I fucking cracked the bolt this afternoon and am stoked! I ended up using a little propane torch and the JIMS tool I bought from Rollies (love express post, bought the tool on Wednesday and it arrived today) and with a little force it loosened!

Good news mate.... Remember to use a couple of drops of red locktite when doing it all back up. They can be real pains if they wirk loose.

I've got to buy another socket tomorrow to remove the clutch basket, but once that's out I will plow through the remaining bits and pull the engine out pretty quickly (well in theory). Engines going off to be rebuild at LA Cycles in Hoxton Park, want it there by Monday.

Thanks again gents, really appreciate the assistance.

    Cheers

last one I did on a mates I swear I was going to break something, why the fuck it's that tight is beyond me, never going to work loose for sure.
New model twin cams are much easier but you do need a fucking big shifter.

remember the thread direction on the clutch nut mate

Well, got home from work early today; was supposed to go to a Xmas party for a client but bumped it in favour of working on the bike! So with a little fucking around, another socket to fit the clutch main shaft nut......................she's out!!! Motor will go off to LA Cycles tomorrow, strip the rest of it down by Sunday and frame and forks will go out to be powdered and polished.  She's coming along nicely!!

Thanks agian for the input guys, really appreciate the help.
