Anyone had dramas from plod with Indicator lenses

Howdy Forum fighters. I am asking if anyone has had plod book you, or give you a warning about one of the most serious of offenses known to man! Smoked indicator lenses!

I was told by my dealer that they can no longer test ride bikes after doing maintenance, if the bike does not comply with the ADR'S, they said one of their techs was pulled over by plod and given a fine cause the bike had smoked lenses. Can this be so? ( there must be more to it i reckon).

What is so wrong or illegal with smoked indicator lenses as opposed to clear indicator lenses? Most, if not all cars these days have clear indicator lenses and the globe is amber, legal right? So if a car can have this, is it allright for a bike to have this also? I would think so. So then if you had smoked lenses, and the amber globe, and it still flashes bright orange, whats the big deal? Sounds like an easy revenue raiser to me.

Is it the ADR'S that says the lense must be amber or clear only, as long as the indicator flashes orange?. Anyone know? Cheers FLHumanTChU.

    Hi,

I looked into it when i got a module that made my indicators come on when applying the brake.

In Vic, the turn signal has to be amber, if any lense affects that you are in trouble, in our case its under VicRoads legislation.

Since took module off and installed custom dynamics LEDS

    Thanks

I have not been fined yet for my smoke lenses in QLD but a lot of officers look
At them and ask me to turn them on, however I have amber globes so flashes orange.

As you said plenty of new cars have clear or smoke lenses from factory, do I don't see how it's breaking any laws.

Yep I got defected for them, also for my smoke lay down tail-light as it didn't incorporate a reflector and you must have a rear facing reflector ffs....

It was out if town cops on a blitz, they were going crazy that weekend. Just said that didn't matter if the globes were amber, the lenses had to be. Mine didn't gave the correct stamping on the lenses either though, they were cheap eBay jobbies, back on straight after the canary was off if course :)

happened to be at the local stealer this morning. 2 bikes in the used line up with smoked lenses, I asked would they pass RWC, answer was absolutely.
Went inside and there was a set on the wall, no mention of for off road use only on the pack.

Not sure of other states but unless Newman and his cohorts have changed another law up here , as long as you have amber bulbs you should be right ... I was done quite recently for not having the tiny obscure rear red reflector that sits between the top of the number plate and beneath the tail light .

Was given a defect notice but only had to fill out back of notice and send it back in saying I had rectified the problem ... no fine or points just a interruption to a nice ride up through Mt. Mee .

The new ADR only allows yellow direction indicator lights.

My reading on this is you have yellow lights, there just behind a smoked lens.

The Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 6/00 - Direction Indicators) 2005 - states what "yellow" is......wait for it....

yellow wmust be within the TRICHROMATIC CO-ORDINATES Limit towards yellow: y<0.429, Limit towards red: y>0.398 and Limit towards white: z<0.007

Try working that out on the side of the road.

Me and my mate both have smoked lenses on our bikes and have been pulled over by the cops on the Gold Coast in the last few weeks but nothing has been said about the lenses, but he was done for a side mounted Rego Plate

So what i'm getting from all of this so far is only one person has been defected, and probably shouldn't have been, and others seem to be ok. So if the rule book says yellow lights, and you have yellow (amber) lights but a clear or smoked lense, it should be good as it does not state what colour the lense must be.
That's the trouble with plod. What is fine for one, is a fineable offense to another. There should be no mistakes and double standards to confuse us. I know at the end of the day this is fairly trivial, but its easy to snowball a trivial matter. Anyway i will state what the ADR book says in relation to the colour of the light, and also make mention that it does not specify the lense colour, if indeed i do get quizzed in the future.
Thanks to everyone who replied on this most heinous of crimes! Not! Cheers. Hutchman-a-bintang.

I've not read the ADR in detail but I expect it says that the indicator lens must be marked with the appropirate e-mark.  So whether your lens is clear, smoked, anber or made of cheese if it does not have the e-mark then it is non-compliant and defectable.

    Yep , your right.

Therefore you should be able to have any coloured lens, even the chrome look as long as they allow a yellow/amber light and the lens is marked with the appropirate E approval mark.

Yep, the genuine HD ones are approved I gather and my eBay jobbies weren't

So much of this particular issue relates exactly to the New Qld Bike Laws ... I won`t ramble on about that here but the point being that just because we do the right thing there is always going to be one smart arse copper who thinks he knows better and ignores the legislation and rules and turns a nice ride into a shit ride .

Don`t have a answer unfortunately except to soldier on and don`t let the ass holes get you down ... hard sometimes , especially these days .

Stay safe folks ... Tim .
