Do what i did....buy your own machine and teach yourself to tIG. Its not hard and you will find that you use it way more than you thought you would.

Ozymax: out west or up north preferably but I dont mind travelling for a decent job. was hoping the guy could do the fab and weleding but I can also do the fab - never thought of that

Tussack: mate I'm ALWAYS game for some new tools and I have considered this but the $2000 outlay before I can start practicing is too rich for me..... or is it??? Seriously how long did it take you "get it right". Did you have previous welding experience before you picked up the tig torch?

    Cheers

Tig is pretty easy but a basic tig course at TAFE or your states equivalent wouldn't hurt, I've been doing it for over 30 years and it's great on stainless and alloy

200 Amp ACDC invertor Tokentools/ Everlast/ Weldsmart/ Unimig = +/- $1500 even more if you go to CIG Weld, and even more on top of that to go to a Miller

Helment, gloves, filler rods, tungsten, trolley etc = another $250 - $500

As I said $2000 - cant justify it!!..... Well at least not yet ?????

There is a mob in NSW that can sell you a full bottle (0.6m3) for $220, each refill after that is $70 including postage - which is a real option if you just stuff around everynow and again in the shed

    Cheers

$600 for an inverter AC/DC 200 amp unit on eBay.
$50 for the Ron Covell DVD on TIG basics
Then some scrape steel and a few hours of time. TIG welding is very easy to learn!

If you have ever tried welding using an Oxy set, well the basic technique is the same, but you are using an arc to heat the parent material instead.  I taught myself to tig weld when I was doing my apprenticeship, and that was welding Aluminium at that, I'd never welded Ally whether it be Mig or Tig before then.  Steel is more forgiving than Aluminium too.  Just remember not to touch the tungsten electrode with the filler wire, as it makes a bit of a mess, and then you will have to re-sharpen the electrode on a pedestal grinder.

Keep practising, you will pick it up in no time.  I prefer tig welding, much cleaner, and when you get really good, the welds look bloody awesome, and no need for grinding them if you wish.
