hi all ive got a 1985 wide glide 1340 and its just started blowing smoke out the rear pipe only worse at idle bad enough to put black shit all over rear gaurd, does clear up when riding do you  think its rings, or maybe something else any help would be great thanks, nathan

well it could be, but could be other things as well. have you got a compression tester? is the bike otherwise running ok? when was it last tuned, what sort of smoke.. that sort of info might help get a more informed guess at the nature of the problem

don't have compression tester, bike does run well, smoke is very light blue and thanks for ur help

also just swaped plugs front to back and no diff only blows smoke when warn dosent do it cold

Blue smoke after warm up indicates a possible ring issue, compression test and/or leak down test will help diagnosis.

yep would agree with that, that's where you would have the most vacuum and light cruise may get a few more ks out off her buy doing seals
but for the cost if your paying some one your 1/3 of the way for top end refreash

i had seen a few have the valve guide seal come loose early evo's

thanks guys for all ur kind help, have just done all top end valve stem seals were hard rings were all replaced with hone. bike is back running like new ,

If nothing else Sue4044 congrats on coming back and saying thankyou - very few people do these days - most just take what they can and run. 

no prob at all its great to have a forum were we can help each other .coming back to let ppl know what the prob was it the least we can do, saved me big dollars it was my 1st Harley rebuild and was great to see the old girl run again without the smoke
