Well after re-building my twin cam Softail engine and looking at what hd do I gotta say Im pretty disappointed. As we all know the crank is a major issue. They dont have keyways on the crank pin so the flywheels can move and cause issues plus they get run out and destroy oil pumps. The LHS case doesnt have a proper bearing just a bush and sleeve. The oil pump has different size ports for suction and discharge so this leads to wet sumping. The cam plate is just a cast piece of crap. The cam bearings are cheap and are not designed for long life. When I stripped mine after having the dealer fit a stg4 103 kit the deck heights were out by 20tho.

Now dont get me wrong I love my HD and Ive had quite a few of them over the years but for something that is promoted as a premium product the twin cam engines are pretty crap.

    That is a shame.

Yes they can leave some thing to be desired, and so some choose to build them ground up using what are considered exotic parts but they are really just what HD should be using.
my S&S crank is .0001" cam side and .00005" compensator side with a full width plug pressed. Took him quite a while to satisfy himself that there was actually some movement. Both sides have full bearing housings in an appropriate steel material. No SE Timken torx screw crap arrangement. Cam plate is billet with cam and crank centers matching the case centers. Deck heights were -.oo4" and +.004'. after measuring every which way , piston heights, rod lengths, cylinder angles we found it was all in the new SE case cylinder base heights. Pulled it all apart again and corrected that. Now both are .000".
Corrected Valve geometry with roller rockers and Billet support plates.
    ARP Bolts through out.
over kill? maybe, Peace of mind ? absolutely.
    It's called Blue Printing

When I did my bottom end I used the original crank but I sent the whole lot to Ollie. The crank has been welded, trued and balanced. The cases have been machined to take the Timkin bearings. Yes I spent a whole lot more than I had to but its piece of mind for a long lasting engine.
