    Hi Folks,

i have a 2003 Softail (import) and have recently discovered, with a forum member's help, that I have no VIN recorded in my ECM.

I contacted Perth HD about re-entering the VIN, but they said they couldn't do it, and they further advised that the imports are totally (emphasis theirs) different to the Oz plated bikes, citing wiring harness as an example of one of the differences. Anyway, they "won't touch them" is what I was told.

Ive just married a PV to the ECM, so I'm not keen to swap it out, even if that's possible. Anyway got any ideas on how I might be able to have the VIN recoded into the ECM?

    Thanks in advance.

Is there any particular reason that you need it? Im not even sure if it's possible at least here anyway

    G'day Fatbat,

    Thanks for the reply.

The reason I'd like (as opposed to need) it is because it will enable me to use the Auto Tune feature on the Power Vision I just bought; PV auto tune is once removed from another layer of expense - an amazing bit of kit. Other than that, I couldn't give a rat's crack!

    Cheers.

Can I just add to my last comment that anything that gives more power to the bike owner to tune and control their machine, in my view, is a good thing.

I've owned a Harley for a little more than a year and I'm already sick to death of them "locking" maintenance and tuning related issues to their authorised workshops (via Digi Tech, etc).

Harley have not given this up with newer models, apparently ensuring that ABS is accessible only to HD techs.

The Missing VIN is very common on 2004 and earlier bikes. The 2001 model year had no provision for the VIN to be stored in the ECM. Later updates to the software allowed for it. If you used Mastertune it would allow you to handle the problem yourself. The HD dealership should be able to install the VIN at the same time as they do a program update.
