Try and go out of the holiday season as the prices for accomodation is very pricey also there are way too many people down that way for their summer holidays.
Also take your time watch for the internation tourists who may go on the wrong side of the road, also take your warm clothes as the weather does change very quickly.
Have a nice time there are lots of nice roads and sites to see, dont ride like a maniac you may get into trouble.
Rode between Penola and Port Fairy today, via Nelson, Portland and Hamilton. So we took the less travelled roads and didn't see many vehicles all day. Hard to believe it is a holiday period. Happy cruising at 90-100km/hr today. That should all change tomorrow when we hitt he proper GOR. Found this little old farmhouse off the side of the road about 30km north of Port Fairy: Untitled by Darke Peak, on Flickr
I envy you dynoHarley for living in this part of the world. That road from Lavers Hill to Beech Forest to Skenes Creek is bloody awesome! And we didn't see many cars on it. We have reached our destination intact (Mornington Peninsula), and only saw one crazy driver and one annoying driver. The crazy driver stopped in the middle of the road on a steep incline just out of Apollo Bay to take photos. They were oblivious to the traffic banked up behind them. Luckily we were travelling the opposite direction. The annoying driver was a WA plated landcruiser, towing a camper trailer, doing 25km/hr on a 10km windy stretch between Lorne and Anglesea. They refused to use the slow vehicle turnouts and the traffic banked up behind them. And double white lines and plenty of oncoming traffic left no legal way around. Didn't see anybody driving on the wrong side of the road. But it must be an issue judging by the number of warning signs along the road "Drive on the left in Australia". Good idea gone bad in most cases, since they put the signs on the left side oft he road. If you want to remind people driving on the wrong side of the road it would be better to put the sign on the right side of the road where they are more likely to see it. http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-_and_left-hand_traffic
