Just take your time and enjoy mate , holiday period so might pay to book your accomadation in front , especielly around the queencliffe , ocean grove area , and the mornington , go there through Meninguie and the coorong , Robe is'nt a bad little place to stop first night ,

Be vary wary of the speed cameras , zero tolerance , The ocean road is a great road but its been neglegted in places , so be a bit careful , but heh on a switchback with the wife on board , its never gonna be a race so, once again just take your time and enjoy .

I do that road at least twice a year and never get sick of it.

Although like china said it can be bedlam at that time of year ,

When the signs give you a 100kph limit, just watch the hairpins and don't enter them doing 100kph.

    Hi,

I go for ride on it often, yeah summer is busy at every town getting in,

Portland all the way thru to like torquay is nice man, probably wanna stay at Apollo Bay, so airys inlet, angelsea and torquay quite busy getting in and out of town

Yeah obey the speed signs theres plenty of tight bends, i always reckon it would be a great venue for the world rally chaampionship to be held

Also nice ride up to Forest and over to Colac, probably for me Port fairy to Apollo Bay favorite, you get to feel the power of the great oceans of the world and then head to the forest for twisty section

    Thanks

i drive/ride the ocean road everyday. tourist are the same everywhere. biggest concern on the ocean road is if its wet. can be very slippery when in the mountains' you would be lucky to find accomodation anywhere from warrnambool right through to queenscliffe that time of year along the coast. could be a better option if you have the time to head inland for your nights. none of the towns are as nice as the coastal ones but it would be your only chance of a bed that time of year. you would be lucky to even book a tent site from now for that time period. you can ride warrnabool to queenscliffe in a day with a couple of stops for pics but with tourists it would take a whole day. the speed limits for the towns are reduced to 50kph for the holiday season and 80kph maximum once you reach the ocean at apollo bay. heavily policed to. dont even think of crossing a double line. they haver regular blitz's along there and hidden cameras and tog in the bush at times.

having said that, dont be disueded. its a great ride on a sunny day even of your two up and just doing the tourist thing. but if you have any desire to stay along the ocean road, start calling now . best towns based on most accomm... apollo bay, lorne, anglsea, . few more smaller towns but these are always full to the brim. good luck and enjoy the trip

    regards cactus

Yeh .... Times 50 what there saying about the hairpins , If your an experienced rider they wil not be a problem , but if your not don't be taking them too fast , , theres always a car full off japanese smiling faces , coming round the same bend , clicking away , just waiting to knock you off ya bike .

Most memorable ride i ever had was going from Hammilton to geelong , along the ocean road , a few years ago , never went over just sat on the speed limit all the way , but jeez when it was in a thunderstorm with torrential rain bouncing a metre off the road , lightning flashing all over the place , and thunder literaly in your ears making them rind ,

It was facking EXILLERATING ,, and funny enough when we got to Geelong we could'nt find any accomadation , lucky i have a sister that lived 50 klm away .

Last time I went on it there were signs reminding the tourists which side of the road they should be driving on. surprise

It is a great ride, watch for tourists ducking off the road at the last minute for happy snaps of yet another beach. angry

    Have a ball. yes

There's a little music festival on in Lorne called 'The Falls Festival'. You will find it very difficult to source accommodation at that time of year unless you pay big big bucks for it. Happens the week around New year, I'd avoid those dates.

Be careful on the Great Ocean Road in Summer as its chokka full of bloody Asian's who drift to the wrong side of the road as they normally drive on the right hand side.

Mornington is fantastic though and you will love it (traffic is normally bumper to bumper on the main streets, but the back roads are great)

sunnyside is gravel. there are no other bitumen roads that run to the coast around that area cept the one you have chosen. if you have time for a 3 hour ride plus stops, head from skenes to forrest, forrest to colac, colac to Gellibrand, lunch at pub or milkbar, gelli to ferguson, turn left to take in turtons (very very slow run for 18 ks , like 40kml speed limit, or turn right at ferguson to take you to lavers hill then left back to apollo bay. if its dry, fantastic runs, if wet just take it easy. while at ferguson, take a look at triplet falls. 2 ks of good gravel to carpark, then an hours return walk but worth it. also the Otway fly treetop walk isn't bad for a visitor to see. same road as triplet falls just out of ferguson.

Definately. I went there last year( car) and was stunned the koala population. It was amazing, a few of them bumbling along the side of the road, baby koalas everywhere, it was great. Went up to the big lighthouse too. Great place, very wild and natural.
