Indicators? WTF?

    Hi guys,

I'm no electrician, hell I am no mechanic but had always kinda assumed that indicators should work when wired up? To put this into perspective, I bought a set of these (see below) and had a crack at wiring them up today but they're 'self-earthing' - one wire type indicators.  I assumed that one wire means power, connect and we're good to go........................couldn't have been more wrong.  Thought I'd ask the questions, what the fuck am I doing wrong? Why wont they indicate................haha?

There has to be a trick to this and I just dont know it!

Any assistance would be great appreciated.

    Thanks

I see that it's an LED bulb, so it may cause you grief when all setup as I think you need some special bits to get them to flash at the normal rate.

I hope I am wrong though.

Well, the final verdict is - They don't flash and I've had it!! Hahaha!!

Tried earthing the unit out with a separate wire whilst connected to the power and 'No Bueno'!!

I can get them to light up but when I do my rear indicator also stops flashing which leads me to believe that you were right on the money Lurker; has to be something to do with the BCM, LHCM etc.

    But for tonight, we're done!!

    P.S - its on my 98 Dyna

    Don't give up!!

Following on from Lurkers advice, find the ends of the two original wires. Keep the body of the lamp isolated from the chassis, and connect the purple wire to the wire that comes out of the new lamp, and the connect black wire to the body of the lamp....

If this works, you can use the new lamps, but you'll have to electrically isolate them from the chassis....which could make mounting it a bit of a headache...

Thanks gents, the little hot-rod style ones cost me about $40 bucks so not too fussed about putting them on the shelf.  Found another set this morning on eBay that have two wires so that should sort my wiring issue out.............hahaha, famous last words.  The whole point of this process was to relocate the 'trailer-lights' that came on the Lowrider to allow me to mount a set of fork shrouds from Lowbrow Customs.  I had them polished last week (mine were black) and they cam up brilliantly, however they cover the mounting holes in the lower tree so I couldnt keep using the relocation kit on my bike.  I then fab'd up little brackets for the front to mount a small set of indicators from the forward controls and another set out of aluminium to mount of the rear swing arm via the axle bolt.  Really wanted that concealed look..................been looking at far too many Japanese Sportster books and because a lof of the things on my 98 Lowrider are almost identical to the Sporty - I'm really loving this bike!!!
