Does anyone know the remedy for this problem.
I have a 2012 fatboy lo and I fitted aftermarket led indicators front and rear. After doing so the engine check light comes on and off all the time. The indicators flash properly, at the right speed and work perfectly fine but on the dash panel the green arrow flashes faster than the indicators themselves when indicators are on and ofcorse the engine check light comes on too.
The dealership recoginzed the error code on their computer when hooked up to my bike. the error was associated to lights, they cancelled the error and the engine check light vanished until I rode out of the dealership driveway and then it was back again(on and off all the time).
I asked Badlands if they had a load equalizer specific to my model bike thinking that this may fix the engine check light coming on all the time and make the green arrows on the dash slow down as this is the most common remedy but badlands said there is not an equalizer for my model because my model has the new BCM (body control module) and does not require a load equalizer. They also said they have seen this issue with with some "no*name" led lights and some bigger branded led lights. They have available on the market some led indicators that have no problems so Im wondering if my led indicators are missing some technology within their circuit board or something. My led's are not el cheapo indicators by anymeans at $100 a pair but Im not sure of the brand as they were not boxed/branded in the shop display case when i bought them.
So has anyone got any insight they can share?
Hey Juzzy, I'm running LED indicators on the rear of my 2011 FXST & have the same issue, I've tried a load equalizer which made no difference! I spoke to my mechanic about it & he basically said there isn't a fix due to our bikes having a BCM. Yes you can clear the error but as soon as you use the indicators again it will reappear. If it's any piece of mind I've been running these indicators for over 12 months now with no adverse effects except the error light on the dash.
Sorry I couldn't shed any light on the problem, if you find a fix I'd love to hear about it. Spero..
Thanks for sharing Spero. At least Im not alone and its not a gremlin in my bike. Ive been living with the engine check light coming on and off for a while now too and no problems either. Im runing all 4 idicators in led's they all are running perfectly fine and at the right speed within the light itself. Does your dash green arrow flash faster than the indicator when on like mine does.
Im on the case to get this figured out because i'd like it corrected. I guess it could be like i said earlier that the particular led indicators im running give the error due to whatever as are yours but there are other leds that dont create the error. Its got me beat for now.
Ive tried adding a temporary extra bulb( to make a total of 3 lights flashing on one side) to add more load but it didnt make any difference. All 3 flashed in correct time and speed but the green arrows on the dash were still flashing faster.
I thought you might appreciate that someone else's having the same problem Juzzy.
Yeah my green indicator light on the dash panel flashes faster, the indicators work perfectly apart from that. Was the extra bulb you fitted the standard Halogen or another LED? I think for this to work you'd have to put another bulb on each indicator. I wonder if putting an individual resistor on each indicator may increase the load enough & fix the problem?
From my experience the BCM is a fucking pain in the arse!! I changed my headlight globe to a slightly larger wattage & the result was the high beam indicator light on the dash stayed on permenantly, the high & low beam functioned normally though. The only way I could rectify this problem was to swap the headlight wiring harness with an older model one which fixed the problem. Very strange!!
Yes it was a standard halogen bulb i added for the test. I added one to each of the rear indicators. Maybe I should have connected one to the front and one to the rear say on the righthand side and tested it that way. I may aswell have kept the oem lights on if i'd known this would happen.
Its a pain in the arse if we need resistors on each light and even if we needed the load equalizer we would have to shell out another $120 or so, why cant they just release the bikes with led's from factory the wankers or the aftermarket mobs need to get there shit together.
Adding the extra bulb all on the one side would probably be a good test as long as the error message was cleared first.
The thing I can't understand is why they need to put a fucking BCM on a motorbike! We all buy Harleys to customize them to our own taste, the BCM really inhibits what you can do with the electricals.
Good luck with a fix Juzzy, I'll be watching closely to see if you find a solution..
Spero when I connected the extra bulb I was thinking to myself "this wont work because the error needs to be cleared first" and that means a trip to the dealership and no doubt a finacial contribution. So at this point Ive got nowhere yet. Ive been asking around to folks I know and no one knows how to fix it. And there definately is no Badlands fix either I got Badlands to double check if a unit was available for 2012 Flstfb's and they confirmed again that there isnt.
Robots thanks for your insight. When I only had my rear Led's on I never had an issue it was only when I fitted all 4 Led's (front and rear) thats when the error showed up.
So in saying that it must be that when the front halogen lights were still in place the draw must have been enough but then when I fitted the front Led"s the draw dropped and that may very well be it old son..........Its like I need another light fitted to increase the load draw, one on each side and the error cleared at Harley to rule that one out. I'll see what I can do.
