I have run my 2011 Fatboy on pretty much everything out there, including some shit I got in the middle of QLD when I got lost

and thought I would be walking, then I came across this old shutdown workshop near on dark with an old bowser that still had

some fuel in it. The guy charged $2 a litre but I would have paid $10 I was that relieved.

If I can I will put in BP or Caltex, but as I said they will go on anything and mine is the 103 se big bore kit.

Only going by what I have been told ... stay away from the E10 stuff ... unless you stuck in the middle of nowhere of course ... but as above , BP or CALTEX the slightly dearer stuff when possible ... 95 or even better 98 .

Probably all a conspiracy to make us pay more but I like the piece of mind with the higher octane stuff ... I know in my old work ute it pings like crazy on cheap shit but not so bad on better stuff ... luckily I have duel fuel on the old beast and run 2 or 3 tanks of LPG to every tank of normal fuel .

100% Shell VPower here. Used to also run Mobile 8000, but thats gone bye bye since they solg out to 7/11.

I will not touch BP since the cockup they had in the USA where the polluted half the coastline.

I won't use shell because it's a denser fuel and causes my old Z to break down around 5000 rpm.
But i use caltex,bp and mobil all highest octane available. I spoke to a tanker driver delivering fuel to a
united servo that used to be a mobil and he told me that mobil supply united and 7/11. I tended to believe
him as the tanker was mobil signed.
Either way I won't use shell.

Just a query on Shell 100% Vpower ... am I correct in thinking that when you say 100% then that relates to 100% Octane .

I must admit to feeling the same as Harvey when it came to using Shell as I also had problems on my old Z 1000 and have been told by a mate who works in a fuel refinery up here in Brisbane that Shell was a more denser fuel ... but if you guys are having good results with it on your HD`s then I will have to give it a go .

Lurker ... I agree with you , it would be a lot simpler if fuel companies used the same names for their stuff Australia wide ... are you sure E10 has a rating of 95 as 10% of it is Ethanol / Sugar based and is VERY bad for your engine long term ... of course if it is the only thing available out in the bush somewhere then you have to use it .

I think the consensus is though if you can run a higher octane fuel on a regular basis then it is going to be better long term for your motor ... only thing of course is the massive price difference when doing so ... and again my mate who works at refinery up here tells me there is a bugger all difference in how they are refined ... so why such a huge difference ... because they are rip off bastards , that's why .

    Hi,

I run 91, 95, 98, mix it around but shell, BP or caltex and bike runs fine

Done some tests on ride to mt gambier and you do definitely get more kms so i think buying 91 or 98 is priced about the same
    Thanks

I always use 95 because my bike was dynoed with it. Unless you have a high performance engine there is no need for 98. This is like a religion topic, everyone has their own opinion but do your research and unless you are running a high perf engine you will actually get less mpg per tank.

I always buy the highest octane rated fuel at whichever petrol station I go to, so far I've had no problems, the bike always runs smooth.

Thanks Lurker for the response ... always interested to hear different opinions .

I also agree with you about Steve being right about certain aspects ... these types of believes are hard to change some times ... I found that very interesting about unless you have high perf engine then you would get worse M.P.G. if you used 98 on a near stock motor .

Will have to do a few long haul test to check that theory ... up until now I can get as bad as 14.5 K`s per Ltr ... head wind and hauling my fat arse as well as the missus and giving it a bit of stick ... at best 15.5 to 16 K`s per Ltr ... one up taking it relatively easy .

No major engine work other than the usual ... Pipes ... Air Cleaner and filter ... Power Commander ... Fuelling Lifters and adjustable pushrods ... Dynoed at 85 Hp and 100 Torque ... usually run on 95 octane but occasionally 98 .

I consistantly get 17-18 Km per litre running the Shell V-Power (the main reason for V-Power is the high octane and the gas station is on the way to work)

Thanks Lurker for interesting ideas ... will have to keep an eye on things ... as I do a lot of Bush / Country rides sometimes don`t have a choice ... unless I want to push of course , Lol ... but always run at least 95 when available .

Will definitely have to try the Shell Vpower if 4 to 5 extra K`s per Ltr is the out come ... over 18 Ltr`s that can equate to a extra 70 plus K`s ... but I think another variable to look at as long as one is using at least 95 is the cost ... not sure of the difference`s in all of your area`s but here in the Logan and surrounding area`s there can be a difference of at least 20 cents to 40 cents per Ltr ... and that`s between 95 and 98 ... I`ve seen 55 cents difference between 91 and 98 ... rip off bastards .

It`s like when the missus says Lamb roast on special at one place for 10 cents cheaper than another place but you waste more fuel to get there ... { If you are a Vegi , ignore the Lamb reference , Lol } ... the same principle for fuel , one place may be cheaper but if you have to travel crazy distance to get it then not much point .

Anyhow it has been a interesting thread ... and at least we still have fuel and bikes to play with ... if Neumann here in Qld gets his way we won`t have bikes for much longer the Asshole ... but that`s another debate .

    Cheers all ... Tim .

I always use 98.Ride everyday and I ride the Harley 3 out of 7 days.Other bikes a Suzuki LC, (Prefer to ride it in heavy traffic)
I try to use BP when I can. Otherwise I use Caltex. Both bikes when I start them in the morning will tell me what quality fuel is in the tank.
This is relative to the fuel I bought, not the Brand.

the fuel economy thing is related to the temp, the higher the octane the more heat is required to make it burn. High perf engines run higher comp pistons which require greater heat to combust properly. I am no expert but this fuel issue relates across all types of bikes and low comp engines just don't require 98. They will run just fine on 91 as that is what they are set to run on from the factory. If you want to run premium use 95 as it still has the same cleaning agents as the 98. I run the 95 as when my bike was dynoed it had a full tank of 95, I could run 98 but really am wasting the extra 5 cents a litre. If you really want to run 98 go for it but with a standard engine your only helping out the servos.

Not to go off on another tangent but was curious when Steve L mentioned the cleaning agents in 95 and 98 ... is it correct to assume there is not the same cleaning agent in 91 .

I also ask this question as recently in my old work ute which is duel fuel ... Lpg and normal petrol ... I have had some issues with lately ... was running like shit on normal fuel but great on Gas ... have had the injectors sonic cleaned or whatever that means ... new fuel pump in the tank ... new fuel filter ... tuned twice now ... and now the latest Mechanic has said that the fuel is old and should run premium fuel as it has a cleaning agent .

Hence the query about cleaning agents ... Tim .
