Hi guys ... pretty sure there are some Evo devotee`s amongst you all ... have recently scored myself a 99 Fxsts ... the last of the Evo Springers ... if I`m wrong let me know ...

my question is this ... is it correct that this model had a 32 degree head stem angle and is it also correct that this model had a   - 2 or 3 degree angle set in it`s forks and just to confuse matters I have been told that the Fx models had a certain   - degree where as the Fl models had a slightly different set up .

It won`t look this way for long ... hopefully by the new year she should have a nice Bobber  /  Chopper look to her ... Tim .

why fuck such clean looking classic bike it would worth a lot more in the future to keep it as it is if it was a rough looking early looking bike I would say go for it
but to me that's a waste and bobber should be hardtail sorry tju but I love it the way it is love that colour

my bent bike in my avator   and yes your right about 32 deg rake  that's what softail evos have

Hi guys , thanks for the response ... HogBag , 11,500 K`s ... yeah pretty clean unit ... it`s amazing how little K`s a lot of those Yanks put on there machines compared to most of us Aussie`s ... I did a nice little ride last week end and clocked up a 1000 K`s on a Saturday and Sunday and wasn`t pushing anywhere near the limits ... just a mate and both our missus out for a cruise through some of our great country roads ... all be it nearly every where you go there are bloody road works going on ... argh .

Perth Hog I hear what you are saying ... it really wasn`t a easy discussion to go ahead and change this clean ride but it was next to impossible to find a wrecked 96 or newer springer for sale at a decent price to do my next project .

My last project that is just about done ... or so I think for now , Lol ... was this 2008 Softail Custom that went from the copper paint scheme to ...

What you see now  ... so now I have my modern comfortable ride for the missus and me and just always wanted a Bobbed Springer , solo seat set up for myself ... and agree it would have been cooler to go the whole rigid style but lets face it our Aussie roads are shit and like I said above to HogBag while I love to get out there the reality is a rigid isn`t the right type of bike for 1000 K rides for a 53 year old unfit bugger like me , Lol .

But hey it would be a pretty dull old boring world if we all agreed on every thing and I appreciate your feed back ... when I finish the Springer / Bobber / Chopper project I will post some pics and see what you all think ...

Probably a crazy time to be taking on any Harley project up here in what used to be a great place to ride before the crazies from the Out Law Gold Coast got all the pollies and police into a Harley Bike Blitz frame of mind ... Oh well with a bit of luck by the time I have it finished things might have calmed down a little .

    Tim .

yes tim I have seen your posts regarding your bike looks good and made it your own , it was one of your early posts before you got a hd regarding wide tyre deal that got me
to do a wider tyre deal on my new build ,just what ever you do don't paint the tins if there still good getting harder to get ,get rough set then paint ,she just looks great apart
from those big arse indicators on the springer lol

Know what you mean about the blinker size Perth Hog ... bloody huge hey , Lol ... just for argument sake what do you think a set of Tins would be worth as you might have something there Perth Hog ... I was intending to Flat Black them with some Old School Pin Striping but if I could find another set that weren't to stuffed that may be a better way to go ... did that with my 2008 Softail ... found another set and kept the originals for future sale or use .

Kiwi Dave , isn`t it frustrating trying to find some specific info regarding that question ... and other stuff sometimes in this time of supposed high technology ... every time I tried all I got was the standard info ... there is a good site called "Total Motor Cycle" but for what ever reason it doesn't seem to have the info for that model .

I was fairly sure of the 32 degree head stem angle but just wanted to check but was curious to the fork angles as Harley Davidson built in a negative angle into their Springer front ends and was just interested to know why ... I`m a bloody curious bugger , Lol ... although another reason for knowing is obviously directed at handling abilities ... not that I am going racing through the mountains or anything , it`s just that I have the opportunity to swap the current front end for a Fl type from same year and if it angle is more in the negative then the steering capabilities may be better ... all part of the customizing experience / Journey .

It`s also funny the amount of sites that state both a 1340 and a 1450 size motor for the same 1999 Fxsts model ... I know the first of the TC` s came out in 1999 but I thought they were only in the Dyna`s ... what is you guys ideas on the size of the fuel tanks ... again all the sites say 4.2 gallons but they seem awfully close to 3.5 gallons ... again just a curious inquiry .

I will see if it is possible to get a specific year and model manul from the local dealership because the only ones I can find online are the Clymer ones that are ok but usually cover about half a dozen different models from the same year .

Any other interesting pieces of info you guys have feel free to drop me line ... always eager to learn from guys with the knowledge ... cheers guys ... Tim .

tim in last 2years of searching for parts every day as I was laying in bed for 11.5 mths from bike accident I have come across 3 sets in diamond ice one I got out of
japan full set perfect condition cost me $900.00 good price cost me $400 in shipping inc) there was a springer set in the us that sold for $1400.00 and another set sold for about$1280
and I got a Aztec orange set from us which would have been real good if the dumb arse had wraped it better that cost me about $700 with big chips in tank from shipping
and have seen take off us dealer sets wanting $2000
new each tank is around $1400 each rear guard was $700. front $550 in aus at the time so yes if the set is good its worth keeping
as for the springer tank being smaller yes it is only 3.5 I have a right one of them in diamond ice didn't know at time I got it ,maybe the tanks are smaller to do with springer front end .

Thanks heaps Perth Hog ... didn`t realize how much they were ... should have I suppose considering I went through the same type of thing with my 08 TC ... real interesting about the size of tanks ... bloody real hard to get definitive answer when looking on line .

Even checked at Gasoline Ally over here and he even said 4.2 Gals ... but he was reading from the 1999 manual the covers all Softails from that year ... I reckon you might be right about being due to the Springer front end because they are a lot more thinner in width and the 3.5`s would contrast well against that style of front end as opposed to the wider telescopic type front end .

Are you on the mend now or is it a ongoing battle ... thanks for info ... Tim .

Geez guys sorry to hear of your troubles ... hope it all works out in the end .

One small mystery solved ... 4.2 U.S. Gallons turns out to be 3.5 Aussie Gallons ... hence my confusion ... still haven`t found any definitive info on fork stem angles as yet ... even down loaded complete factory Manual and of course there is no reference to such figures ... only 10 Bucks for down load so now have a reference at least .

As to the original post on fork figures , it isn`t the end of the world type of stuff ... just one of those curious questions I didn`t think would be that big a deal to find out , now being the stubborn bugger that I am it is my mission in life to solve the puzzle ... onto the next clue .

Thanks guys for info so far ... Tim .

If you could talk the stealer guy into doing it, you could compare frame part numbers to see if they are the same or not.......

Gidday Colstah ... have already tried something simular with Gasoline up here in Brissy ... if it isn`t something from the 2000`s they don`t seem to have much info .

Was more a query as to why Harley Davidson would build in a negative fork angle into their Springer front ends and " IF " it is true that the Fx models had a different angle as compared to the Fl models then again why .

My curiosity will get the better of me one day , Lol ... but until then the information quest continues ... thanks for the idea though ... Tim .

your not alone size wise there Perth Hog ... I`m a light 140 Kg`s ... should be a nice little test for the 1340 , Lol ... and no worries about going off topic , just hope you guys get some relieve sooner or latter .

Bluey Star , I to have read about both the bearing issue but mainly the difference in tyre sizes ... with this new project I am putting in a 19" front wheel and a 17 " rear , both from newer model Harleys as they have the newer and better wheel bearings .

Should be interesting to feel the out come ... if it rides like shit I will still have the originals to put back on .

    Tim .
