Smoking Engine

    Hi All

Went to start my bike up this morning and smelt a burning smell, wasnt oil, smelt like rubber/fabric. I hoped of and looked down and noticed a small amount of smoke coming from where my rear pipe enters the block.

Roughly where the arrow is pointing. The bike was only serviced 3 weeks ago and has been ridden a fair bit since then with no issues.

    Any advice/feedback would be great.

    Cheers

Check for contact of lines in that area?

This might sound silly but you've obviously been riding it, haven't managed to get part of your shoe/pants/clothing caught on the jugs whilst getting off and something has burnt in the process? I used to get a rubber smell from scooting around in an old school pair of trainers, in short they were melting! Could also be something as simple as shit flicked up from the road, who knows but if there are no obvious electrical issues and the bike ran even whilst there was smell it is highly unlikely that it was anything too serious.

I would be getting a mirror and checking all the wires, hoses and lines anywhere near that area.
Smoke will run along metalwork especially where there are air currents due to convection so the actual item being burnt may be lower down.

Dont find out you have a contact burn by waiting for something to stop working.

Probably nothing but I would be chwecking out fully.

Make sure the nuts off the header pipe are both still on too. I've lost a couple over time.

if you accidently dropped a condom out of your pocket it may have got caught in the backdraught that 78 goldenboy is talking about. there may also be some anti cyclonic barrometric differencials at play so you will have to check that out as well.

So had a really good look over it today, couldn't see anything that could be causing the smoke. Started it again and it happened again, looks like its back to the dealership.

So did you change pipes recently? If so, did you put on a new gasket? Did you try tightening the nuts that hold the pipes on to spec? Just sounds like a little leak to me. If it's under warranty get them to fix it unless you fucked it, in which case they'll prolly charge.

Nah stock pipes still, haven't touched them. Bikes still under warranty, just got to get it there as I don't really want to ride it like that.

Pick it up tomorrow, they recon there's nothing wrong with it. I think they missed something in the services and just haven't owned up ;-)
