Hey guys & Cruizie,
Just had some pegs and grips delivered not much of mechanic and not a lot of quality tools. Wouldnt want to damage anything wondering what the toolkit should include to get me through the basics. Appreciate some tips :>)
Torx Spanners and soket wrenches
Imperial Spanners
Screwdrivers
If you skimp on quality to save a few bucks, you will regret it in the long run.
I would rather pay $70 for a hand full of spanners that I can rely on and look after, instead of paying $15 for ill fitting crap that I dont care for and loose..
Steer away from vice grips, pliers and even cresent wrenches (shifters).. they are poor compromises for a proper spanner
Exactly what Bonkerz said .
Yep get the best tools you can buy as they will last you the rest of your life.
Also there are several metric bolts on harley's these days as I have found with my Fatboy Lo.
Thanks men off shopping tomorrow !
YOU can buy a set tourx head allen keys from HD shop if one around ,I bought set from gold coast HD shop wasn't even $20 and will do nut on footpegs adjust hand controls on bars
and other places ,need set rings panners coz they fit lots on bike say 1/4 -1" I have open end and ring in the set I bought ,some metric as well if you ever want to do front brake pads
there are some tricky sizes on our bikes .THE cheapest way 2 buy tools go 2 pawnbrokers always spanners an socket sets there and sometimes a lot of single spanners and wont
cost the earth brands well if it says made in china not good or tiawan not good but made in japan tools ok make yourself familiar with brand names look on internet ask google what
tools and names are ok don't rush and don't buy shit coz u will regret it and those funny tourqx head bolts are 12 sided so that's a must if u buyin spanners or sockets and u will need
imperial allen keys of good quality SHINGLES SHIT HERE I AM GIVING ADVICE AND I CANT EVEN WORK OUT HOW TO WRITE PROPERLY mate changing grips can be bit
difficult u may have to spray lubricant up into grip as maybe glued 2 bar this is were u may have 2 look on internet you tube ask question how 2 remove grips on HD BARS AND u will find info and video usally da best 2 av a gander an watch first will pay off and give u heads up about removal hope u do this coz ive always used and thank god I did
Cheers Shingles grabbed some kinchrome torx and Allen keys a mid range set of ring spanners not sure the brand got them from Autoleaders about $30 for six from 1/4 up to bout inch. Used them to put on some Kuryakn pegs as mentioned gunna get a mate to help with grips but will take advice & watch vid 1st. Have snap on sissy bar going on for missus Get some picks up soon. Thanks for advice Shingles and other guys as well. cheers Frothy
firstly gaday mate now HD torx head bolts an nuts can be a little different 2 stuff you've bort beware of this especially in female type means u have 2 insert tool into torx bolt head sounds like its all about sex don't it but ive found a lot of tools not specifically made 4 HD wont be right as they have tapers in bolt head or something unusall mainly torx stuff
especially allen key torx tool ive found out da foolish way ,tool seemed 2 fit ok then trying 2 loosen handcontrol bolts dam thing jumped over a spline and started burring all edges .IVE got plenty of tools been working on bikes and cars 43yrs but not many tools I have fit exactly right HD nuts an bolts seem 2 have a unique design a lot of small differences like tapering
on bolts an nuts its the small bolts you have 2 watch if it doesn't loosen strate up beware before u apply more force coz will just strip torx splines an then u will hav to drill out ,I bought HD tools on internet from all over world ,some companies make tools just 4 HD SNAP ON does sometimes second hand sets available ,but tasks you doin will be pretty strate
forward go get yourself some sockets say from 3/8"- 1" can be 3/8 drive also metric say 10mil- 20mil coz u will need if ya wana do brake pads ,2 put new pads in u can watch you tube or ask members and all shall be answeredSHINGLESan remember av a look at pawn shops bound 2 find cheaper tools u can never hav enough tools I hav 3 of everytin at least even if ya don't think u need that socket set at pawn shop if its imperial 1/2" grab it even if sizes r bigger than u think u need but only if sockets r 12 sided not hexagon type there not the
best tool same wif ring spanner multi sided type aw make sure u watch you tube O if u take bars off but shouldn't don't ever let brake master cylinder thing that holds brake fluid hang upside down always keep master cyl upwards 2 roof ty up wif rope string or watever but keep it up don't let it hang upside down may cause prob with air bubble best 2 leave bars on
when doin grips throttle side can be tricky make sure u observe whats goin on label cables with tape wen u take off throttle slide as theres 2 that's if u have 2 change slide maybe not ah well the joy of changing parts
Thanks shingles Sounds like I've got plenty of buyin and learning to do
