Due to change rear  rubber.  Bike 2009 FLHT Electra Glide.   Just comming up to 18000 kms on this rear  .  Had 2 x sets of  D407 Dunlop  since new,  No complaints with stock tires. Just wanting opinions from  people that may have used the Dunlop American Elite on their tourer !!!   I was a little suprised that the American Elite are approx $20 -  $30 cheaper than the stock D407 's  .   Cheers .      PS , the  middle pic is the American Elite ,   have read the tire compound is the same , but a different tread .

     Hi,

i looked at the d407 vs gt502 for my wide glide as i read people getting good mileage, the shop wanted and extra $40 for the d407 at $299 vs $259 for the GT502

on the dunlop website i noticed that tread depth is greater with the d407, maybe like 11/32 vs 7/32 for the gt502 in my case

so check the specs on the american elite for tread depth as well, i ended up going pirelli

    thanks

Thanks for your replies.    The old saying,  "if in ant broken, dont fix it ".    Tire thread can be a bit like oil threads,  .  Dunlop say there is a back order problem on the D407's ,  so I thought  I've  give the American Elite a go.    Cheers.

Give Motorcycle Warehouse Tyres a ring , 1800 6289737 , They are in Brisbane , deliver to your door.  You wont get them much better than $300- 310 delivered .

Check the Sponsers on the forum to see if they stock them.

A month or so ago the D407 's where a bit hard to get .

PS,  If you have got 24,000 out of the D407, and your happy with the handling , I would'nt be changing to another brand !!!

    Good luck ,

Just had two rear tyres fitted over here in the West, going to try the Mitchy 200/55 R17 for 09 FXST, fitted to rim and balanced for $310 by Motorcycle Masters Kewdale Rd, and a AE 180/65 16 for the 09 FLHT for $270.
Both tyres were a spin off from the Perth bike show, however the Softy required a new rear as the Dunny fitted showed what appeared to me some signs of cross sectional de-lamination, not impressed.
I chose the above specific tyres for the specific bike from scouring the various HD forums and gathering a consensus. Appears a bit of a mixed bag for the 200 rear on the Softy but the 180 rear for the Bagger has strong support for the American Elites.

Not strictly " touring " info I know , but on the US CVO forums they rave about the Elite 3's on all models

Springers are famous for "scalloping" or chopping the front tyres , and the Elite 3's cope well apparently

I'll be trying them next time on my CVO Springer

In Perth I'll prolly have to pre-order them to make sure I get them at the time

I realize this thread is a couple of years old but as I'm going to need tyres soon thought I'd ask if anyone else has a review regarding the American Elite tyres in Australia?

    Currently have a D408f (140 75 17) on front and D401 (200 55 17) rear

First option is D408F & possibly D407 rear however the D401 has held up very nicely

American Elite looks good and to be honest am not concerned if the tyre says HD on the sidewall

    thanks

Like Rob, I know this is an old thread, but anyway...
I've been running the D401 (200 55 17) on my FSXT softail for approx. 8 years. I changed when the stock D407 wore out. I had the D407 break loose in the wet on the highway accelerating in a straight line up hill more than once. Apparently the D401 is more of a touring tire? I believe it is a harder compound in the middle and softer on the sides. It inspires more confidence in the wet with more tread sipes. I like them and regularly get 12-14,000 kms out of them ( I only do country riding, bugger all city stop start riding) and reckon they hang on very well in the wet. Both seem to be similar prices.

I had a Bridgestone dual compound (hard in the middle ,soft at the sides) tyre on a jap bike a few years back.
The bloke that fitted the tyre told me to be real careful until the tyre was warmed up.
He wasn't kidding cos if you gave it a squeeze when the tyre was cold the bike was all over the place.
This thread might be like an oil thread but I haven't read an oil thread where anybody had conclusive proof of
a bad oil. The Bridgestone was a dodgy tyre (when cold)
I just put on a Pirelli night dragon but I don't thrash the bike the way I used to so maybe I should have bought something harder.
The confidence you get from a decent tyre is invaluable.
