67 FLH Oil Pressure

My 67 FLH runs just fine, not a ratle out of her, oil pressure fine. Then after 15km or so, when she is hot, the oil pressure drops to around 20-22psi and 10psi on idle and she then gets a real tappet rattle. The pressure is obviously dropping of and the lifters are not doing their job due to lack of pressure.

Not long had her and just back on the road, so do noty know a lot of the previous history.

Rather than go round in circles, what do you think? pressure switch, weak spring in the pump or something else. Any ideas gratefully received.

    Cheers

    Hi Bob,

To be honest, not sure. It still has the oil that the previous owner put in. I had intended to do a change once she was up and running. What are you reccomending?

    Thanks

Hello Bangkok Bob is correct on shovels or anything that is basically stock prior to the evo in 1984 you should use a straight 50 weight oil. l have a 78 1200 and l have fitted a TP oil pump and Velva Touch valve lifters with Jims Roller Rockers 1.5 ratio and it is as quiet as a mouse. ln that engine l use HPR 30 which is a Penrite multigrade oil, but l have changed the lubrication dynamics of that motor especially with that pump

Great looking bike. Has it got solids? New oil filter and and oil will give you peace of mind. Straight 50 oil is the go.
