HD's and theft

    Hey all,

Being new to the world of HD, I'm just wondering what they're like in terms of theft? Not so much when stored at home, but if going out at night and leaving it street parked whilst you're doing whatever you're doing.

With the supermoto's I'd almost always chain them to something immovable as they're light enough to be carried away by two blokes. But with the sporty, it's pretty damn heavy, so I don't think "pick up and carry" type theft would be a problem... so rules out alot of the opportunistic type thefts. Given that it's got a keyfob alarm etc, would you guys park it on a Sydney street (busy-ish area) at night?... maybe just throw a disc lock or something on it? I know that common sense applies, but just wondering if anyone here has been a target of theft, or if HD's are particularly tasty for the theiving scum.

    Cheers.

Mate, if I cant see it, I wont park it there. I take the view that the worst paranoia is better than the worst case scenario

I am paranoid so lock both disc's, steering and lock the rear chain to the sprocket. I also keep a curly steel wire cord that I use to tie the old girl to the nearest immovable object.  Plus I try to park where a 'drive-by' theft would be difficult.  (im talking about locking my bike up at work during the day where i will not be within eyesight of her for hours on end, as opposed to at home)

Having said that a chap on a new 48 parks next to me and all he does is set the immobiliser and walks away.

NB: I do not have insurance - same bike for the past 25 years would mean i could have bought a new one with the insurance fees.

No use stressing out about leaving your bike, sometimes you have leave it out of sight, if you have insurance there isnt a real worry you can go and buy another one.

Like its been said before, if they want it they will take no matter what you do.  Also you think your sporty is heavy, not so heavy when 4 guys put a big piece of time through the front & rear wheel then lift it onto a Ute then off they go even if the alarm is screaming its head off. Alarm is only a deterrrent.

Yeah it's all insured and stuff, but it's just a pain in the ass to lodge a claim, etc. Plus insuremyride did it at market value (don't know which market they were looking at) and undervalued it by about 3-4k. Plus add on what I've spent on it in the last 3 weeks and I'd be out by about 6k if it got stolen.

So if you guys head out to a bar or something near the CBD, you'd park it on a side st under a light and throw a disk lock on, etc? I know if they want it they'll take it.. just wondering if HD's are of particular interest

As a young bloke my house was broken into and that pissed me off . But about 10 years ago my softail got pinched and that changed the way I look at every cunt interested in harleys . = insure it, lock it up, and never take it for granted that it is safe unless you can see it . Still a lot of dogs out there that want it for rebirth, part out , or because they are to piss weak to work and buy one themselves . Yeah I'm still fucken angry 10 years later.

I have had the misfortune of seeing that happen about three months ago to My pride & Joy, Heartbreaking to say the least & knowing there is nothing You can do about it.

Yes it was insured & the Insurance Co paid out within a week, But in no way did it cover all the xtra's & hours I put into it or the distress of seeing it burn & the mess it was when they put it out.

Rule number one in my book have everything insured, you never know when something may happen & like most of us we work too hard to have something taken away from us to just walk away with nothing.

I went through the same thought process.  Contacted the local H.O.G. Chapter, a big one, and they had one bike stolen a few years back, and none since.  Put my mind at ease a bit.

As said before, if they want it they get it, and you won't know till you go to the shed next day.  These people are knee's.  Thats a foot lower than a cunt and less usefull.

at home in the shed when I go away for work for a few days I disk lock my rear disc and allways lock the steering/egnition etc....if I park anywhere I can't see it,,,on goes the disc lock...if I shoot down the local shops...lock steeriing and ignition.I haven no alarm on my bike.

I read something just recently 3 out of 4 bikes stolen are rolled away... so there is some food for thought.... and yes,,,,you would need 4 big boys to lift a 330 kilo bike,,,

lock it or loose is the slogan somewhere?? which is apt... at time I sorta think fuck she'll be right I'm only going to nip in and be straight out,,,yeah,,I don't leave my car unlocked anywhere!!! so why should I think my bike should be any different.

    cheers Jimmy.

p.s.  I'm fucking pArANoId too.  (wink)

Like most things, you can buy good insurance or cheap insurance.

No good worrying too much otherwise you would never ride it. I brought mine to ride it, not hide it.
