loose drive belt

just come back from a good run

rode from dirranbandi up to cooktown 4800 km round trip

before i left had the glide checked out by the dealer in toowoomba [i do my own services due to isolation]

and they said the drive belt was a little tight so they slacked it off a touch

bike went well but developed a bit of a noise in the drive train between  townsville + cairns, dropped into the dealer at cairns and was told the same old story [too busy to look at it for a week]

but the service manager suggested it would be the primary chain adjuster taking its time to click over to next cog

and not to worry about it

ok well that sounds about right dont it?

any how arrived home and its oil change and wash the bike time and i discover the drive belt has 5 " of play not the recomended 1/4 " and axle nut not as tight as it should be

rang dealer in toowoomba and told him i was pissed

i adjusted belt and took bike for a short ride and its as loose as buggery again

anybody else have any problems with their drive belts?

i cant see any visible cracks or anything with it but it surely wouldnt help its service life running so loose for a couple of 1000 kms?

    Hi Roo,

are you talking 5" up and down total or each way? and 1/4" up and down total or each way?

Has wheel actually moved or is it belt stretch?

The question that comes to mind is not so much assuming the belt was set to 5" of play from the start, ( unless they didnt tighten the wheel which could be a prob sooner identified), but what happened along the way. Types of roads, hard accel, etc. Not that this should cause it outright, but maybe a set of conditions contributed to the outcome.

    cheers

    hey mick

the belt moved up + down about 5 "  total when i checked it after i got home and i found that the axle nut was not tight enough

so unfortunately i reckon i did 2000 or 3000km on a belt that was floppin around way too loose

went and borrowed a 36 mm spanner to adjust belt to workshop book specs give the tool back and rode the bike for 20 kms

now the bastard belt is way too loose again

i really put a bit of pressure on the axle nut when i tightened it so i would not have expected it to come loose

will have to wait to borrow the spanner termorra to check again

do ya locktight the axle nut?

i mean thats the only way this belt would loosen aint it?

bike has just clicked over 30000 kms now im thinking running the belt loose like that would have rooted it

    Hi Roo,

need to confirm if the wheel has moved. If not, then belt may be suspect. If it was that loose you would have noticed the belt skipping on the pulley on hard accell from take off.

double check that no rocks etc are caught in either sprocket or the belt, as it sounds like possibly an ecentricity issue. Also jack the bike up, and rotate the wheel watching what the belt does. See if it stays at constant tension or goes tight/ loose/tight....

    cheers

    Mick

PS- should not have any need to locktight axle nut.

    Roo,

just had a thought. Check your lower belt guard. See if there is any wear on it. I have had a situation where the belt was caught on the guard in behind where it attached to the frame. This created at taut belt and was wearing through the plastic of the belt guard. Once rectified, Belt was loose in comparison.

    Cheers

    hey mick

yeah just had a close look today and the axle musta moved slightly when i tightened it up

it aint straight as the adjuster cam is touching on the left side but not the right

will have another go termorra and try and get it right

the whole procedure looks pretty simple should never have got it wrong in the 1st place

but my real beef is how rooted would this belt be after doing so many kms after the dealer left the axle nut loose enough so that it became so slack

had a look and as i said cant see any cracks stones etc but the rear sprocket is showing a little wear i reckon

                 cheers

              pat

yep think i have found the cause as to why i cant  re adjust the belt tension

seems as though when the dealer did a quick check over my bike and adjusted the belt tension

they didnt tighten the axle nut to spec ultimately coming loose enough create some movement in the axle and flogging out the inside of the right cam adjuster

now i realize it seems strange  but didnt notice any great problems with the handling [maybe it was just the shit roads up the centre of qld masked that]

but did notice a noise that i queried in townsville but too busy to look at bike [why do i find this sort of crap service after spending 30 k on a bike]

guess this means a 5 hr trip back to dealer to fix the result of their shit job
