About three weeks ago I bough a brand spankin Sporty 48, which I am absolutely loving! I'v filled her up twice, the first time not knowing how much fuel was in the tank to begin with as the dealership said they'd filled her. The second time was yesterday morning when I filled up and discovered that I'd used 6 liters to do all of 89km. I know that I should expect high fuel consumption during the break in, but that's a bit ridiculous I think.

Anyway I called up the dealership and spoke to them abotu this and the mechanic agreed that this is not normal, he then went on to ask if I had fitted any aftermaket parts yet (Filters or pipes) which I had not yet. He then said that they would have a look at it but he was not sure how much they could do because bikes without a SuperTuner were very difficult to adjust the tuning on.

This does not sound legit to me, and I feel that suggesting that I now spend extra money to get the bike tuned properly is more than a little unreasonable, the thing is three weeks old and should perform properly.

I'd love to hear from any of you who may have had a similar dilema, and how you got it sorted. I may very well take it in and get it sorted right out, but want to be ready for that conversation if the suggestion of buying the SuperTuner comes up.

    Thanks

     bb

What a load of wank. Fucked if I'd be giving them more money. Millions of bikes don't have a supertuner and they don't have that problem.

If you don't smell any heavy petrol fumes either when the bike is running or stopped, there are no dripping fuel leaks and you don't see any fuel dilution or smell any in the oil I would run another tank through it and make sure of your consumption before anything else. You want to make sure the rings aren't washing fuel down the cylinder into the oil from an excessively rich fuel mix (for whatever reason - which is not likely anyway).

That's a load of BS about needing a tuner......

It does smell pretty rich when idling, I noticed it, and a mate commented on it too, what it sounded like the guy at the dealership was saying was that it's really difficult to adjust the fuel mix without the tuner. This sounds pretty stupid to me, but I know very little about EFI systems.

    Thanks for all the advice.

So this is completely normal? It's supposed to smell this rich and I should ignore the fact that the dealership said that it's not normal?

I used to get around 200km out of the 12 or so litres on my Sporty riding up and down the freeway so if you're getting 90 km out of 6 litres so early, then that sounds 'roughly' about right. It should get a little better as it gets run in but if you run bikes in like I run them in then I wouldn't be worried yet...

I'm no mechanic but I know how much fuel a Sporty can go thru if you give it a bit...

Yeah new , tight and restricted , it should loosen up in time and also be better again later when allowed to breath and tuned , I try to use 98 fuel too as much as possible , slightly noticeably better mileage .
    Cheers

Thanks guys, with the recent weather in Perth I've not been able to get out much! But I am absolutely loving the Sporty! I have only used 98 fuel. I may cancel the date with the dealership I have for thursday and give it a few more weeks and tanks of fuel before taking it in again. I really appreciate the help here, got the day off tomorrow so may take her for a nice long ride (as long as my tiny fuel tank will take me) and see how she fares.
