Whining neighbours

About 6 years ago I bought an apartment in the northern beaches. It was brand new and off the plan, and I was the first one to move into the block (small block of 10).

Anyway, I've always had bikes. I raced 600's, and rode a GSXR750 as a commuter as well. Both were loud (full Yoshi systems, etc).. I've also had a KTM 640 supermoto in there and another big single, a KTM 530EXC which had a full akra system on it (threw flames!).

I picked up my first HD just over a week ago, it's a sporty ('48') with V&H Short Shots. Admittedly it's loud. It's probably as loud as the 600 race bike was, but it's a much deeper rumble.. you guys know the sound.

We have new renters in on the first floor, they're renting the unit right above the garage door/carpark entry. I'm not overly loud by any means, and try to be as considerate as possible. My car space is right at the back of the underground garage (opposite end of the block from their unit).

I start the bike with the exhaust facing the back wall to keep the noise from pointing out to the street... there's only so much I can do, but I'm sure they can feel the rumble through their floor being in the first floor unit. I don't let the bike idle for 10mins either.. I basically get it in position to ride out, start it, then let it idle for about 2mins whilst I put on my helmet. I then cruise out of the garage with as minimal revs as possible.. problem is the short driveway is really steep coming out of the underground garage, so there's no way I could push it up there to start around the corner or something.

Anyway, whilst climbing the driveway the revs go up a little (about 1/5th throttle) and then I basically check the street is clear and exit to the street. Whilst giving the street a quick left/right check on the way out yesterday (at about 3pm in the afternoon), I could hear screaming from behind me.. I didn't know what it was but turned around to see the new people in the bottom floor unit hanging off their balcony screaming at me to "turn it down"..  I shrugged it off and just rode off as normal... But whilst on the ride started to work myself up to a point where I was contemplating doing some things that might land me in trouble should they confront me on the way back in. I'm pretty sure the guy has no balls, as he didn't even look at me on the way back in and I stayed in the garage for a good 15mins to see if he'd come down. He didn't.

Any of you guys have similar problems? Short of the whinging guy volunteering to push the bike up the driveway and around the corner at a minute's notice, I don't see any other option... It's a war that they will not want to start with me, but I wouldn't be able to resist if the opportunity arose, and I'm afraid things would just get much worse for the new renters... but in saying that, I do prefer friendly neighbours, and I don't want to go to work wondering if their tinkering with the bike whilst I'm out, etc...

    1) Tell them how you're doing your best to keep the noise down. You'ld be surprised how a lot of people become reasonable when you face to face them and they know you actually acknowledge their concerns.
    2) get quieter baffles

Letting any bike idle for two minutes, especially a loud one is annoying.  Also, pointing an exhaust towards a wall is just going to make it louder.

From what you've described you live in a really unsuitable place for  making noise.  I'd suggest you start your bike then ride out as quick as you can, it's the prolonged idle that is annoying.  No one is going to complain if it's 10 or 15 seconds but two minutes, you'll get complaints.  This is a no win situation for you, if you confront your neighbors they'll just get pissed off and take it further.

I find it funny the people in that unit change over every 6-12months....

    I wonder why?

Hey Busta just strap up a big number go visit them and blow their minds away, they'll just smile and wave after that and say nothing but nice things about you.

I'd drop them a note - less confrontational - just explaining that you are exiting as quietly as possible and infrequently.

Some people are nut jobs and wouldn't think twice about fucking with your bike if they thought they could get away with it

Good read! I am really surprised about the ultra long warmup time; that seems way way too long.

I warmup fir about 5-7 mins but that's only because of the turbo and everything. Without the blower it's only 3-5 minutes.

Mine warms up for a couple of minutes only as putting on helmet, then I'm off but take it easy for the first few minutes, may as well warm it up while on it, keep the neighbours a little bit happier

I agree with KC's comment. i ride everyday and to not annoy my neighbours i roll down my driveway, kicker her over while im rolling and ride off.

I get up at 4.15 am half the time and have had no complaints at all... maybe im just lucky?

I do roll the bike out of the shed and shut it up before riding the bike out to the front of the driveway to let it warm while I throw my helmet and gloves on (maybe a minute or 2?) I don`t let it warm up too long, i just take it easy, just put putting..on the road (especially until i am out of my neighbourhood) for a few mins before upping the revs, and when I come home I coast the last 50m into my driveway.. golden rule? do unto others?

Start it up ride it out and sit on the road mate if you want to warm it up.FFS, gives us all a bad name.
Idle for 10 minutes? Who does that? 2 Minutes idling in a garage near units? Are you serious? No wonder the EPA fucks us up. Dude could be doing night work or weekend work, could have a new born asleep, who knows, think of other Aussies.

put your lid on before you start the bike and let it warm up as you go. depending on the acoustics of your particular building your nieghbour might have a valid complaint but if they are only renting tell them to fuck off cos they are second class citizens and you are an upper class north shore apartment owner. that rides a big fuck off harley, pull your fuckin head in

i was gonna suggest you get on to the body corporate about the people that are renting that flat and then i realized you are probably the chairman of the body corporate. if your giving the bike 20% throttle up the driveway its not gonna wreck the engine, but an experienced motorcycle racer like you would know that. i suggest you keep doing what your doing until you get the smack on the head you need.

G'day Busta, this may be hard to do and rub you the wrong way, but, why don't you go and introduce yourself to them and welcome them to the block. Have a chat about life and things in general and feel them out to see what type of neighbours they are. You never know, and may end up with some really great friends. Tell them your issue with the driveway and even though they might not like the noise of your ride, at least this action may just lead them to tolerating it. While you are there, sus out the missus and give her the occasional wink. She might calm hubby down when he becomes irate.
If they are a good understanding couple, invite them to a barbie, and then they will never speak ill of you. Or at least not to your face. ( you may even get to shag his missus when he goes out if she likes you)
If they are morons who just don't get it, leave a used condom behind the toilet so his missus can find it and get him in the shit, or leave your mates moby number on a post it and stick it to the fridge so he can find it, call him up and get her in the shit. Either way it will cause issues no matter what. This may be more fun than you realise. See how you go. Dr Hutch. Psy.D

if he comes out the next time you are going out, turn around and go have a chat, if is only a ride you are going on, there will be no rush for you

as it is mid afternoon, i cant see a problem, you could be running the lawn mower as it is a weekend, you expect noise on the weekend.
I work shifts and am not surprised when I hear noise on Saturday and Sunday, I roll over and go back to sleep. having said that, I can sleep through most things
sleep 10 hours when on nights

the old knickers in the glove box, she could explain if he finds them and vise versa

Do you guys realise the word 'neighbours' is a derivative of the Latin word 'Narber' meaning "I hate that fucking noise." (whatever the noise might be)

lets get back to the fuckin story busted. in my opinion you have been given some good advice but i get the feeling most of it went over your head . if you give me more information about your life history (bike racing, property ownership, body corporate participation, employment situation, street fighting experience etc) i will talk to my shrink tomorrow and ask what she thinks. but i was thinking if you could get your pipes as close to that wall as physically possible you could have another little drama with another neighbour that you annoy. best of luck princess
