Just a bit of a rant / letting off steam .

Out for a casual ride this morning up here in Sunny again Qld ... out through Sanford .. Daybro .. and then turn to head up over Mt. Mee and further afield ... and who is there to greet all the bike riders but our lovely helpful police force ... all smiles with , just a breath check sir , thank you .

All good there .. { just as well with the few Rums I had congested the night before } .. but wait there`s more ... just before you go sir the transport dept are here to give your bike the once over ... well of course officer , any thing else I can do for ya I thought ... indicators , check ... lights front and rear , check ... horn , check ... brake lights , check .... wait what`s this , no little red reflector between the number plate and tail light ... goodness gracious me sir , looks like we will have to issue you with a defective notice , because as we all know the vehicle just won`t be safe in broad daylight with out one .

Only shining light was the fact that he said there was no fine and I only had to mail noticed back into transport dept saying I had fixed the heinous crime ... interestingly not one single car was pulled over but every single bike while I was there was subjected to road side test ... although I did notice that a couple of P platers who had there P plates just about covering the whole number plate were only given a warning ... presumably as I was a big old mean Harley rider I should have known better and they were just learners and needed a bit of grace  .

And then the cop that breath tested me try's to be all friendly and say gee , must take you ages to polish your bike with all that chrome ... I wanted to be a smart arse and make some smart remark but thought why poke the prick ... didn`t get done for the pipes or bars which have always been a concern so count my lucky stars and move on which I did and tried to enjoy the rest of the day ... a bit windy but not a bad days ride in the country .. apart of course of defect notice .

Arh , that feels better ... hope you all had a nice day folks ... stay safe all .

    Tim .

Yeah what can ya do hey , anything to take the gloss off an otherwise good day , a sign of the times if ever there was , i think we're all gonna have to get used too or come to accept this sorta regular attention when getting the bikes out even if it is just to avoid the disappointment of being bent over when ya just trying to enjoy the day out on one of ya favourite local runs ?
I sorta began to expect it now , makes the day all that better when it or some other drama don't happen hey ?
    Cheers

There were a couple of cops pulling (only) bikes over on Anne Street in the city (Brisbane) on Friday evening.  I don't know what they were checking for but it seemed to be all bikes rather than a random pull.

Yeah, well, I reckon despite the angst of being 'singled out' as a biker , you were either lucky they didn't give you grief over the pipes, or perhaps their heart just wasn't in it.

I mean, maybe he can fill his quota by doing you for the minimal hassle no reflector offence, allowing him to let the pipes slide. I'm sure some cops don't agree with the hard line approach.

The fact that he paid no notice to your pipes means zip. They dont test them on the side of the road they just deem them too loud and send you a notice. Dont even need to stop you as they just write down the rego and whack the notice in the mail. Hopefully this is not the case, good luck mate.

well in general thinking about po po on weekend well unfortunately if your a worker that's the only time that you can get out on ya bike and of course blu knows that and its all down to luck ,that's what my lawyer told me yrs ago when I was up 4 dangerous driving and today I was all outa luck ,I tried 2 escape but they trapped thee and boxed me in at gun point ,I said must be a mistake you've stopped wrong person so placed in cop car still in jacket gloves an helmet coz they were thumpin thee but didn't feel anything so in car waiting an waiting just remain calm after a while I became dozy nodding off this is like 6.30 am an fell 2 sleep was trying 2 stay awake whats wrong with me something not write took helmet off undid jaket getting hot in here fogging up all windows wound up ,then started 2 get short of breath whats wrong with me felt week tried sucking in a heap of air only 2 find I was lacking oxygen then it dawned on me u mongrels staring at me in car collapsing from lack of air fuk I panicked started hitting window trying 2 get attention ,I was so week couldn't smash window cause by now I fading fast and thought this is the end I kid you not and would defy all rules 2 get out finally the door opened ,I fukin went off my fukin head at every cunt at full voice and im a loud cunt and didn't care about circumstances of whats right or wrong self preservation overtook all logic and air was all I wanted fuken cunts that was da scariest shit ive ever had done 2 me of course in court I was guilty of all sorts mayhem and licence taken all I did was ride 2 work that's all I did ,I proved my innocence in court but I was called a liar by the magistrate so 10yrs no licence and had chases all over the coast never got me nearly had me a few times but no way I was getting bak in cop car without a battle ridein up wrong way on road anything over curbs I lead em into shopping centre and jus slip threw I would ride far 2 avoid they were so close yet so far ha ha ha but now im old and responsible and sensible do most of riding during week as don't work anymore and I misbehave like no tomorrow SHINGLES

Thanks guys for taking the time to read my little rant ... I`m certainly not surprised by the police actions as I am a 53 year old bike rider with over 33 years time put in and have had my fair share of interactions with our boys in blue , some I deserved some I didn`t but that doesn't change the fact that it messes with what was up till then a nice Sunday morning ride .

But like I said I didn`t get done for the pipes which I am happy about but I should say that while I think they are loud maybe just maybe they are no louder than other Harley`s with after market pipes ... I know I have read it some where but what is the decibel level allowed in Qld , anyone know ... and would most bike shops have a device to check sound levels just so a guy could defend himself if he had to .

Burnzi , you were saying they don`t need to worry about checking pipes on road side , they will just send a notice in the mail ... is this the same Australia wide as I thought Qld police had a small device that gave them a ball park figure as to if a vehicle was to loud or not and then site them with a notice ... hope I don`t get a unpleasant surprise in the mail in next few weeks

What about the front fork reflectors .. are they needed .. reading Luker501 reply above there doesn't seem to be the need for the big ugly yellow fork reflectors .. would this be true .

Thanks again guys ... Tim .

Yeah i had V&H bigshot staggered on my heritage , although i never got hassled when being pulled over I almost always expected too , i thought they were ok , not overly obnoxious or anything compared to anything else , maybe bordering on 'a bit much at early hour starts , being as discreat as i could my neighbours were ok with them besides what better sound to wake up to hey and although I thought they sounded great i ended up getting sick of them bangin'away in me 'right ear hole on long hwy legs , my '09 roadking has much more rearward expelling and sedate V&H MO's on it , i don't mind em , though i recently noticed it actually has a "Stationary Noise Information" sticker on the left side of the frames neck , it says 86db and has the HD OEM code and part number of the exhaust or cans that achieved that level in standard factory trim , think it means that any modification from that part # Number possibly could be in breech of the regs or if not the allowable db's of which by memory was @ 88 or 90db ?
I too have heard of roadside testing , also heard of them trialling (in Victoria?) noise check cameras , like a stationary (on a post) speed camera but for (all vehicles) noise entering city limits or residential areas , as Burnzi was sayin' they don't need to issue you a notice on the spot and pretty sure any complaint from say a disgruntled neighbour or anyone that would go to the trouble of making such a report , could see ya recieve a notice in the mail too ?
Virtual revenue gold mine really as not too many leave em in standard trim , and I reckon the V&H MO's may even be on or just over the db limit ?

    Cheers

Relax and enjoy the forums hey !

It`s all good Lurker ... I actually found out some interesting stuff from your multiple post ... appreciate your efforts to inform me ... and believe me there have been times on this site when my computer didn`t want to play the game and got the better of me and I just had to shut it down and come back the next day ... not easy for some of us stubborn bastards , Lol .

Cheers all ... and now I`m out to the shed to find where that bloody red reflector is ... stay safe one and all .

Tim, do you have to take the bike for inspection or just report that it has been fixed? Sometimes a minor defect is all that's needed, then they go over everything at the full inspection.

I changed to a laydown plate bracket and also dont have a rear reflector anymore.
If I get done it will be because of the pipes. Might look at reflective tape if I move back to QLD.

SA has been kind so far.

Yeah well said hey , sure answered TJU's question , it can't hurt knowing the exact regs even if ya don't agree or follow them , everyone sorta has an idea via their manuals and multiple 'frame stickers or word of mouth , but sometimes it's good to know the in's an out's of a bee's butt in anticipation of being stung I reckon ?
Lining everyone up and going right through them all like some sort of revenue raising production line is fucked and hardly random , definitely a sign of the times hey , as is the loud exhaust crap , especially when the powers that be use general road safety as a reason to increase the db's of emergency vehicles sirens , as to be heard better ?
Thanks for the correct info anyway mate .

GT 1200 ... thankfully I only have to fill out back of defect notice and send it back by a certain date , so got off lightly I suppose .

LURKER ... thanks again for the info , especially the decibel level ... one other thing I thought was very interesting was where the Regs say ...

" A person must not modify a motor vehicle’s silencing device if the modification reduces, or is likely to reduce, the effectiveness of the device and A person must not drive a motor vehicle on a road if the vehicle’s silencing device has been modified to reduce, or to be likely to reduce, the effectiveness of the device. "

I reckon a half decent legal Eagle could argue that by having louder pipes actually enhances the effectiveness of the device ... but I think that would have been tested by now , oh well a guy can imagine can't he , Lol ...

    Cheers guys ... Tim .

All good then Tim, would they take your word for it or do you need to include a photo? They should have given the P-Platers a hard time as covering the number plate might mean they avoid all the fines from those speed cameras that "save lives". Cheers GT

I sure hope they take my word for it GT , Lol ... I did ask if that was all I had to do and he assured me that was it .

Was a little concerned latter when going over the Defect Notice and noticed on the back he had ticked the Major Defect box which seemed a bit harsh although nothing surprises me with how governments work ... but one would think if something was a major defect then they would want to make sure it was rectified ... I mean not everybody would be a law abiding citizen like most of us Harley riders , Lol .

Just hope he isn`t one of those nasty people that sometimes work for government departments and is trying to set me up by telling me not to go in and then they send me a more serious notice because I didn`t turn up ... is it possible I could be described as a cynical person when it comes to trusting government types ... I am intending on sending a picture with the original defect notice showing how I have been a good Harley rider and rectified the major defect of no rear red reflector ... this will hopefully satisfy their wishes .

Your not wrong about the P . Platers ... what type of message does that send out ... should have hit them hard so they could also gain a distaste for the bastards , Lol ... just kidding ... sort of ... hopefully they will take it like I did and feel lucky they got off with a warning .

Ride safe one and all ... Tim .
