Hi everybody - I just picked up a rear 17 x 6 spoke wheel that came off a 2008 softail. The rim is going on my 2008 night train, I'm in the process of fitting it up and wondered:
1.) where is the part number on these rims?
2.) it came with bearings (HD9276A) to suit the 25mm rear axle and I noticed that the diameter of the hub is larger than the bearing diameter of 25mm. That is it goes 25mm (bearing) to larger dianter then back to 25mm bearing on other side. Is this normal as the factory rim of the night train is 25mm from bearing to bearing.
cheers
When doing the sealed roller bearings in the back wheel, most important to fully seat the pulley side bearing first. Make sure the left hand side bearing is fully seated first before putting the central spacer or right hand side bearing in, wrote that twice on purpose. It locates the rear pulley so that it is square to the drive pulley, locates the brake bracket to be square to the disc and in the right place on the other side or the brake will drag on the disc. Make sure the other axle spacers are the right ones. The central spacer between the bearings is just a bit longer than the space it needs. The spacers are often year and model specific.
The brake side R.H. bearing does not seem to need to be snug against inner surface of the wheel hub, often there is about a mm space in there, also don't over shorten the correct spacer or overtighten and crush the spacer, which will side load the bearings. Without the central spacer, the sealed roller bearings are side loaded and will fail. Check the wheel spins easily with the axle done up or you will might be stuck on the side of the road somewhere. A Twin Cam camshaft bearing tool or the ebay harley wheel bearing tool gets them out when the centre spacer is in place as they are a tight fit. Use anti seize and don't use a pressure washer on your bike as the water pressure can force water past the seal and into the bearings for a guaranteed bearing fail.
