Broke down

Went for a Ride up the road with a mate and this is what happened to his rocker at the bottom of the hill, I guess we were lucky it didnt happen coming down the range. Every one of them bolts were snapped off in half, weird! we pulled them all out by hand. Harley were good and covered the bill as the back wheel has never been off yet and still original tyre. Rim and Sprocket replaced. Something else to check before going on a ride fellas!

Not sure about the cause Scottie, could possible have not have been torqued up correctly, and havent heard of any recall.  But will ask me mate for an update. (he did buy a lotto ticket)lol

I plan to see him next week for another ride, He has a stage 1 kit fitted in that rocker and he bets me every time, I have my stage 4 going in at the moment and havent told him yet. Cant wait to see the look on his face when I can blow him off the road. heh heh! should be ready Friday 20th, only hold up is the new air filter, different size.

Good advice Blac, pays to cast an eye over everything hey. Least it was a good outcome. Hate to think how that could have gone.

It looks like he has got lucky and didn't destroy the hub.
There are quite a few posts around the place about this. everything from wrong bolts, chrome bolts, reused bolts, no loctite, pulley spacers, chrome pulley's and covers being the cause.
No one has ever posted a reason that convinces me of the actual cause.
The bolts aren't under as much sheer load as you might think as the friction between pulley and hub when the bolts are correctly torqued and the surfaces are correct and true takes a large part of the load.
In the hub there is a counter bore before the threads start, this is not taken up with the shoulder of the bolt so there is some room for movement under shock load.
If the shaft of the bolt is just a little to long then it will torque up before there is sufficient clamping on the pulley which I suspect maybe a contributing factor.
I put a dab of "Blanco" white out, on the edge of the bolt to pulley join so I can see if they ever move. Just have a look when I clean the bike. Never had any movement to date.
You could always go back to old school and drill and wire them.

I would just safety wire them anyway. Way too many stories about them failing for my liking as well.
