To remap or not remap

I have a 2012 v rod muscle,SE Pro Tuner and topless airbox. Was running V & H 2 into 1 pipe but recently changed to stock headers with V & H slip ons. Do i need to remap due to change in exhaust ?.Mechanic says no ,Bike will adjust itself ?. but others say yes. Any expert opinions would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Not alot of cash unfortunately , the v rod is sucking it out of me slowly but surely , I have the bug. Anyhow the remap i mentioned was only to protect the motor from any damage, not for any power gain. Haven`t ridden it with slip ons yet due to someone saying you`ll stuff the motor unless you remap. I thought it was a load of crap but thought I had better check it out before I ride it..

    Thanks for your reply

    Cheers ,, Steve

Yeah you won't stuff the motor, go for a spin mate, see how she goes,

if its fine and your happy with it, leave it

if its a piece of shit, you'll have to do some more tuning work done

whoops sorry!! Saw you asked for expert advice only, I ain't no expert but that's what I would do

    I'll shut up now lol

Thanks Daggs, I`ll take it out for a spin today and see how it goes.

    That is the question.

Alas, I've always been told if you change the exhaust, you change the tune, I stopped using my SE Pro Tuner, went for the TAB Auto Tuner instead, I'm really happy with the Tuner and the best part, no more Dyno's.

Took it out for a quick spin and all is good. Seems to run smoother but that could be my imagination.Gotta say my ears are thanking me , no more ear blasting. I must be getting old. I`ll take it out for a long ride on Sunday to test the pipes and the new progressive suspension I`m getting fitted tomorrow.(new fork springs and 444 shockies) I`m looking forward to that ride.I will let you know how it goes.

I would say going from free flowing system to stock headers and slip on's may make it a run little richer and may help with torque so if the original tune was not great it is possible that it will ride better now.
Only one way to find out for sure and that's exhaust gas analysis typically done in the dyno room.
But I am no expert either, some on this forum are maybe they will chime in.

    Ill pipe in...

The Vrod has O2 sensors doesnt it? And so no matter what pipe (within reason) it has, when the bike is cruising, the ECU (or whatever) will always adjust to seek out the stoichiometric center.

    OR

to put it another way will adjust the injectors to give you the targeted Air/Fuel Ratio as stated IN YOUR MAP no matter what the pipe is (except for at idle where a certain amount of reversion hapens on hARLEYS which will vary from pipe to pipe,  which can f%ck up the Air/Idle.. )

So your VROD may cruize well. but that doesnt mean it will hold up under serious drag conditions.. ANd it doesnt mean it wont backfire like crap when you close your throttle...

I only have a 2006 model superglide with all the stage one bullshit, and so I dont know a whole lot about VRODS but... (youve read this far, now you can read my rant)

I put some O2 sensors in the exhausts of my bike, and hooked them up to the pre-existing wiring...

I have a Screamin Eagle Suprt Tuner Pro (SEST) and all the necesary cables to hook up to a computer.

With the aid of the computer, I set the SEST on record mode and  then took it for a ride to record real time data (just like a dyno) and then loaded that info back to the computer and then extrapolated results and THEN reflashed the ECU...

What a beautiful thing (and no dyno tune needed). I can ride my bike at 80 KMH (yes it will go a lot faster than that) and not even hear my S&S Side Slash exhaust - - Untill I twist the grip.. Then it is all business, and noise... I set my AFR rich at 14.1:1 (i am thinking about changing it up to 14.3:1) [harley default is 14.6:1 = very lean but mathematically correct]

Excuse my drunken rage, but my point is (or seems to be) why did you piss of your SEST - Just get the cables and do the research.. You can get a great tune out of any config...

Once you get the best AFR you can, which is pretty easy,  its on to timming..

LIMITATION -> The only thing data collection WONT do is help with timming... For that, I use a DAKOTA Digital speedo.. It will give me figures like time for 1/4 mile; time of 0-60mph etc

You have to find a quite road; do a few runs and make notes... then go home and retard your timing 3 deg and retest - if its worse, you have gone the wrong way, go the other way... (but always retard your timng first, it is safer than blindly advancing it.) If it runs better, Great! go another degree at a time untill your run times drop off (then you have gone too far - All this takes time, but if you want to say YOU DID IT - you can do it...

So EVENTUALLY, TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION . . . All pipes carry  your exhaust in a wave front of hgh pressure - then behind that rapidly travelling high pressure wave, is Obviously, a low pressure wave. Depending on how low this pressure is and cam duration etc, it can cause a more or less complete emptying of your combustion chamber. So if you alter this pressure by changing the pipe it runs through (your exhaust) , then it will directly affect how much of a charge will enter the cylinder for the next firing stroke. The good news for you is this!! - I agree with your friend; you have not really changed enough to make a big difference.

Basicazlly I just did what all of the harley shops seem to do.... Bullshit on and on and on untill your tired and confused enough that its tooo hard for you and so you spend your money to fix the problem... There isnt a problem...  if you think there is a problem? have another scotch with me...
