I am hearing that wheeel bearings are failing early on Fat Bobs, Is it a good idea to change the bearings when you put new tyers on?

There is definatley a trend of the newer bikes (2010 on I think) wheel bearings collapsing, at this point of time I only know of rear wheel issues.

The collapsed bearings are due to smaller bearing used in the latter models, same shaft size same OD but the width is about 3mm smaller (educated guess from visual).

If you replace the same size bearing as the one that collapsed chances are you will have the same issue again and again, the best fix for this problem is to have the bearing housing in the hub machined deeper to suit the pre 2010 bearing.

I know of one Wheel repair shop that does not hesitate to perform this machining to all rear wheel hub configerations regardless as returned wheels are bad for business irrespective of HD poor design.

A reasonable enough question, and a no-brainer to the rider.

    To the corporate accountant.....another story.

There's another thread around here that laments the apparent failure of the MoCo to uphold it's heritage. Only thing that comes to mind when you talk about corporations is don't get between a corporation and it's profits....'cos it's all about the money....

Thanks for all the responses, sounds like a good idea to get the giger bearing fitted.

     Hi,

my 2010 dyna going well on stock bearings, check the seals, avoid using high pressure wash systems and don't get hoodwinked into the change bearings when change tyres,

Think it's gone from checking bearing at tyre change to changing them at tyre change or eelse

my bicycle doesn't even get a high pressure wash

    thanks
