Bike is 2009 FLHT Electra Glide,
When bike has been running and you stop , say for fuel, you hit the start button and I "sometimes" get that grinding cluck sound ,(not wizzing , spinning of stater motor), and then she starts. Thought it may have been the battery , so bought new battery, (Battery was going on 5 years old ), and check grounds and electrical connections, all OK.
Had advice that it is probably the Clutch Assembly (a wearing part and known to fail), so if the the starter and soleniod are good just replace with Starter Clutch Assembly. Also advice was to do something , ie , replace Clutch Assembly or complete Starter motor because this is the start of a problem, you dont want to be stranded in the middle of know where !!
The price for Starter Clutch Assembly is approx $150 , price for an aftermarket Complete Starter motor , from Australia, (made in China, is'nt everything made in China), appox $380.
As I dont have to remove the Primary Cover to remove Starter Motor on my model bike, so I'm leaning towards the complete Starter Motor, (unbolt old and bolt on new). But then again, $230 in my pocket if its and easy and good fix to install new Clutch Assembly. Anybody been down this road and installed a new Clutch Assembly and wished they had just bought the complete Starter Motor and be done with it , or have you been happy with the install of the new Clutch Assembly ?????
Couple of Pics of ,
1. Starter Clutch Assembly Kit part no 31633-07A , approx $ 150
2. New Complete Starter Motor - Replacment for Harley part 31618-06A , approx $380
Thanks .
Hi Markwoula
my 2007 FXSTC was doing the same. I just replaced the hole starter for peace of mind,, I no you could save $'s just replaceign starter clutch,,,then what about the rest of the unit???,,,also push starting is no option for my sorry old arse.
cheers Jimmy.
Thanks Jimmy,
The replacment new Starters are 1.4kw verses the stock 1.2 kw, (you can get larger if you want), so for the extra money you get a new Starter with bigger kw rating , I suppose thats the way to go. At least looking into all the options , you get to know more about all the bits and pieces that can cause troubles on your bike.
After doing a bit of reading, (this can be dangerous), on starter problems a couple of things kept comming up,
1. Make sure your battery is in good working condition , a battery tenderer is recommended .
2. Your ground to frame is good
3. Your Starter mounting bolts are good and tight , as this is where the Starter gets its ground from.
4. The stock Compensater can cause problems ( A lot of people upgrade to the SE Compensater) Other more experienced people may comment on this !!
5 . Any others you should look for ????????
Cheers
