If you find yourself getting more interested in putting the pride of the fleet down the track {and it gets very addictive } using a shift light is a good idea after you do the calculation to work out your low shift rpm, but bear in mind unless you are a NHRA pro stock rider who can hit his points within 40rpm or less ,consistently ,these guys react to a light near perfect ,they don’t want to see a light as that means they have over revved on the shift, as their engines are spooling up at a gun shot rate, aim lower than what you think ,so if your shift point is 5900rpm set the light to 5600rpm and if your bikes ecu’s have read back data compare your light setting to what your rpm hits are in the module and adjust acordingly .
You would be exceptional if you were consistently under 50 rpm over and could qualify for a seat in NHRA,if it was under the shift point you did not see the light and was trying to predict the light {poor form}.
Engines over 110” ,as they tend to be more but not exclusively sensitive to wear and tear when over revved, dyno data is indispensable when working out the shift points, the more you get interested in how your bike performs the more you want data to see where you are actually going and not relying on what you thought happened {bad} or what some bystander’s observation was {worse},,,,unless,,,,, you have George Bryce looking over your shoulder.
After a pro stock pass ,in some teams there would be three guys looking at the computer screen when the Racepac data was downloaded ,the rider ,the crew chief ,and the owner ,one of the first two knew if the pass was less than ideal it could only be one of them responsible for the outcome ,,the rider if the pass was sloppy ,and the crew chief if the set up was sloppy, we all had to answer to the third guy who at that point was not your friend.
Data is as addictive as the racing itself {including street engines} for me,,,,, it’s tragic.
Thanks Hoody,
I can see how keen you are in all aspects of the bike seen. Taking the time to answer questions for us guys just shows your enthusiasm. I envy you working in a field you obviously love. Have heard good things about your work through close mates of mine. When you enjoy your work it makes it easier to get good at it because the research time and effort is much easier because it's fun. Sounds like you have a good working relationship and friendship with Lushy and I have heard the same things about him. Sounds like I'm sucking but it's just nice to throw out a question and get a genuine answer. That is also true of some others that have posted on this link and others and thanks to them too.
Dutchy.
Where possible running up the same bike same day same dyno was performed, first with the stock 96"engine, then it was tuned and the final result was as stated in earlier posts and it rode great. The same applied to the Sporty, 123hp ,the tune was done and road tested ,all good, then we tried and tested all up three exhaust combos and worked out where to go from there ,the on road manners were not to be faulted in any way,the same for the Bad Boy 84hp after tuning and great fun to ride . As for the 96” to 106” engine build I must be a bit slow as I had to remove the engine, machine and modify parts rebuild the engine and reinstall it, there must be guys in a better league than me if they could accomplish that in a day for a same day before and after test .As for my bike the HP was good the tune was good and the bike rides great . As was stated earlier these dyno’s are calibrated to accommodate atmospheric variations. You are obviously unhappy with the results of a tune on your own bike and that should be rectified by whoever you paid or at least their qualified assessment of why a good result was not attainable by them to your satisfaction, you paid and you didn't recieve either by the sound of it.
But I would be most reluctant to dismiss out of hand dyno tuning based on poor results handed back to a customer. I have been employing dyno services for many years and have found it an indispensable tool.
Not long completed my 09 RoadKing.96 to 103 with hoody heads and throttle body(original out to approx 53 mm),standard injectors S&S 570 cams and quicky push rods and Wiesco pistons. Already had screaming eagle race tuner,S&S intake and vance and hines power duals with monster rounds.Assembled and tuned by Tassie Choppers.106 horsepower and 114 flbs.Very Happy
wow reading all this was interesting but im overloaded with it now ,and yes 2 things come to mind here power accelleration grip and how 2 get off the mark and controlling the input of actually moving forward without breaking into a pile of smoke and not much forward motion ,that is if you intend to get going in a hurry an givin it a real handfull on launch in a friendly
drag with ya mates or whoever clutch control is most important and feeling that through your fingers or hand ,all the power in the world get u no were if you cant control that ,yeah roll ons are good but can ya get it off the mark without spinnin up an sideways before ya change up or back off ,it all means shit really mines bigger more this that unless u can ride da
thing all means shit ,ive got a little 103 stg iv fat bob screaming eagle kit ya now one of them comes in a box and drove in 1 day and picked up next day don't know how much care was put into assembly or any technical oversights on shops behalf ,cost 4700 come back wen u done 1000ks man said then motor will be dynoed in morgan wacker Brisbane ,man said
at present motor producing 100+hp ok I replied an rode out an gave myself instant thrill when twisted throttle an laid darkies every set of lights on way home ,then time to be dynoed wasn't really fussed on the whole thing another 550 but man said its a must so away bike goes next day I pick bike up they said all is good heres some charts for u well chart saz
117hp 117 tq that's nice I replied paid man had a drink while motor warmed up he told me do not ride until u give motor a good warm up as we no your rideing style is aggressive and that will hurt motor listen 2 wat im saying u understand yes I nodded and left in a blaze of smoke ,now all up costs $5250.00 so whatever way ya wana put it all this tryin this then that
can be a knightmare putin bits pulling bits off to try 2 achieve an outcome that is not tested or tried an proven with countless research by companies that do I dunno maybe im missing something here anyway my dyno charts are on page 4 in a past post 103 stg iv or open this file this bike is ridden like it was stolen probably 2 hard but then again been ridin 43yrs an
flat out call me stupid or nutter but can ride a motorcycle in extreme ways ya no one of them blokes that does things differently to most nothing written here is to offend anyone just my thoughts only SHINGLES

had all sorts of those if im reading an feeling this ,probably on one right now im still buzzing an tingllng jus rode 200ks was sittin on 120-130 with the occasional open u right up an lets see if u still have that sting ,and yes motor still goin like a scalded cat when really opening up untill i feel that motor givin its all ,i hav shift light an tach i change at 4800 rpm in 1st - 3rd when road allows this behaviour .hit 180 few times tonight roads were a dream long straights long slow curves dual lanes few spots av 2 go back 2 60klm but once past its of to the races again ,but my journey was my thrill 4 the week and no blue contact whatso ever in iether state not a one sighted ,i rode without glasses on coz screen allows me 2 little bit eye weeping but not excessive so that piece of plasctic bolted 2 handlebars and placed way up higher than was designed for ,but i cant bielieve how much better bike is 2 ride its the best addition ive put on bike and thats made riding distance so much easier an pegs with fully rotateable peg mounts also this part can make posisition of peg forward up backwards down up ,so im always changein peg posi 2 try and find the right spot for my bad leg ,now if ya dont want a bad journey like im putting up with on a daily basis ,rite now im in absolute agony feels like someones tryed 2 chop my foot off with a axe and foot is in half and your looking at it wincing in agony and will take anything 2 stop pain bike ride mustave stirred up all the screws an rods that are in bones its absolutely over the top and im swalloin pills just waitin for pain 2 subside ,its fuked my life ,now thats a journey u dont want ive been 2 hell an back with this leg ,ive adsked 2 remove leg as im really sick of the whole state that ive put myself in better go im getting pissed off an need 2 get beer an pills an nock myself out for the night SHINGLES
Could someone please tell me what the cube capacity would be on this. 4.250 bore and 4 5/8" stroke.
131 by my calculations Dutchy !
as in the Jim's 131 which I believe is the biggest you can go in a stock frame.
Thanks Daggs. Thats the biggests bores Hammer advertise combined with the stroke I have now. 131 cube sounds pretty good. Now if I could just win some money.
Hi Fatbat , i didn't add to the post at the time as it was drifting into peoples personal indulgences,, that said, the Dyna still goes better than i ever will be able to realise the capability of..The cam option was put to the people that ground the first set ,they did get back to us and said that getting into more development on a product that was probably not going to have a sales future with them would not go ahead, and as has now happened S&S have sadly dropped the Crane line of products from their parts inventory ,the original set were ground by Crane Automotive not S&S as a few guys were thinking, anyway the bike is a regular around town and trip ride now and is stacking up the K's,i will be putting in a SE mechanical primary chain tensioner and a Progressive monotube fork kit in the near future ,i might revisit the cam question again but it will be a while as there are a few other things i need to attend to .......
When i finished the Dyna and it came off the bike lifter there was another project waiting its turn ,i had been putting it off for a number of years ,i stoped using this bike in 2000 because i did not want the speedo to go over 10,000 miles ,,,anyway ,,,Feburary last year i started the restoration process ,complete disassembly and start all over again ,,12 months later this bike is now back to what it would have been at the end of it's production line in 1973 correct down to the last washer, surface finish and detail ,i'm pretty happy with the outcome ,you can see some shots of it in 'my pics' , the only guys that would recognise it are probably near or over 60 and would have cut their teeth on british bikes [ all of the guys i know from then that ended up on Harley Davidson came from British bikes,no metric in my shed ] , i saw one of these things in 73 and it was love at first sight ,i was always going to have one, it is one of 1100 that were made for the American market that i bought 20 years ago in a very rough state and then rode for a couple of years, and as i said laid it up at 10K ml . " Thanks old mate, Murray Johnson"
There is another lurking just behind it thats begging to be done ,this one will shit me off !!!
Cheers ,
Hoody.
