I want to do some engine work to one of my bikes, it's an early evo, my question is can I remove the heads from the barrels without removing all the rocker gear off the mountings, can I just unbolt the complete head and lift it off the barrel ?, I just need access to the barrels and pistons for now, so want to try and take it apart with the least amount of reassembly, thanks for the advice

You wont be able to get access to the head bolts with the rocker boxes in place.

Correct....head bolts sit underneath the rocker covers. just pull the rockers covers off first and then the base that has the rocker arms as an entire unit - way easier, and that then gives you access to the head bolts. but it assumes you have adjustable pushrods for the reinstall.

If your going that far you may as well hone the jugs and fit new rings.

Now that's a bloody good idea.....does it work in practice though?

I like it! I'll give that a crack next time I pull the heads on the old Evo.
