     Hi Softail riders,

I am from Melbourne and the South East and just received delivery of my Night Train early this week.

I am 58 and have been riding well over 40 years, Ridden all sorts of bikes but this is my very first Harley. I fell in love with the Night Train a year or so back and said i have to have one. I still have 2 other bikes namely the original Copper/Silver Hayabusa of 1999 and a Classic CBR1000FK thats going on club plates early next year.

Bike is a 2009 import that had 1700 miles and in mint condition. The extras you can basically see for yourselves exept for the stage one filter and tuner thats in there. One of the first few things I intend to do is add rear brake Tri-lights and smoked lenses. Change levers to chrome with inserts. Footpegs and grips going to hold back a while till I get comfortable and know what is best for me.

Looking forward in sharing many Happy Harley years with you all.

Welcome Volvi ... mines a 2008 Softail and thinking of putting in one of those speedo / Taco`s like yours ... was it in when you got it ... with the fuel gauge in the speedo , does the one in the left tank cap still work ... does yours have the gear position indicator ... how easy do you find it to read as opposed to the original .

TJ, The importer has to change the speedo for compliance so either he puts a new old fashioned type or pays a bit more and have the more sophisticated one, which is what he did. Only prob is that he never gave me the booklet for it and fked if I know how to adjust things with one given button, so am still awaiting instructions and have never used the original type being my first Harley. Only had the bike a few days. the left cap so far doesnt seem to be working, thought of fitting flush mounted caps anyway. I think the speed/taco aint cheap maybe 350 or more.

Thx Rodtrain still a new mistress for me.

Just received in the email speedo/taco file, so will attach here if youd like to check it out.

thanks guys, just back from my first little 100k run on the bike. ran beautifully, different to jap bikes for sure. ride was a bit hard, gonna have to check out the suspension and rebound. im about 97kg. can confirm fuel level gauge on left petrol cap worked as the electronic gauge on dash. gear indicators worked, last gear 6th shows up on separate 6 light on dash telling you not to bother looking for a phantom 7th. left clutch lever bit sticky will need greasing. transmission smooth as butter. rear brake not effective enough, had to apply more pressure then expected. and pointing right toe in to find the brake pad, not sure if larger pad would be better. was wondering about the reflective strips whether to leave on or remove. how would they come off anyway? seems glued on. any advice on any point raised appreciated.

    cheers.

Nice ride, the reflectors are just held on with double sided tape. I used the wifes hair dryer, heated them up and peeled rite off leaving no residue.

Gidday Volvi ... you might want to look at upgrading your seat if you want a smoother ride ... if that seat you have there is one of those Bad lander ones then that's half the problem , they aren`t renowned for there comfort qualities ... and maybe down the track some decent suspension ... there` s plenty to choose from in both the seat and suspension departments .

I went with Mustang seat and progressive shocks are going in next week , front and rear ... it has to be said that Softails don`t have the greatest suspension compared to others in the Harley family but once you get the previous bikes capabilities pushed to the rear of the brain and ride the Harley in it`s own way then the whole journey will be much more enjoyable .

I`m 53 and a 138 K`s and have been riding for some 33 years , mostly on the Jappa`s like your self but I got to say buying my 2008 Fsxtc is the best thing I have ever done , Bike wise ... I will try and post a pic of the seat ... the one I have is a solo but I also have the matching pillion which by the way the missus swears blind is as comfortable if not more as opposed to any other of my previous bikes ... the detachable sissy bar really helps in that regard .

Thanks for your input re Mustang seats Tim and Rod. I did check through their range which seems to be quite a few. How best to sort the desired one? Historically I have always liked the Regal Duke padded one piece, but fear it may look bit outa place on the Train. Also Im mostly solo. But good back support is what I would like too. Then as to which width, Im a 38" jean wearer. Perhaps you can assist in narrowing the field for me. Also from where to buy? local dealer or direct USA? Always appreciate your input. Thanks.

Try your local dealer first and get a quote then check out Griffin Cycles here in Oz or even better if you aren't put off with the whole buying over the net type of thing then give M & M Cycles out of Ohio a go , usually have some of the best prices around ... just be sure to account for the shipping cost , which they will give you but also the Dollar exchange at the moment .

That one you can see on my bike posted above is real good for back support ... when I first got it .. { from Heavy Duty here in Brisbane by the way } .. the guy there said it would feel firm at first which it did but where the benefits for me at least is when you do a decent ride or any ride for that matter you don't seem to get off stretching your back and feeling like a old cripple .

I will have to chase up exact prices but for a rough example the seat I got through Heavy Duty was close to a $100 dearer than what I could of got from M & M , and that was after shipping cost ... this was Late 2012 before I started buying from over seas ... mind you also at the time the Aussie dollar was far better than what it is now .

My general rule is if I can get it here for no more that say $50 dearer than the over seas stuff then I will support the local industry but when you have to pay sometimes nearly twice as much then sorry it`s over seas I go for my product .

I will check out the exact brand name of mine and also have a gander at the Regal Duke you mentioned ... the only other advice I have received from others and feel worthy of passing on is to not rush into buying the first thing you see ... this seems to be a bit of a disease with me and other Harley riders , Lol ... I now have 3 sets of seats ... 3 sets of handle bars ... and so on and so on ... the missus just shakes her head when she comes into the garage when I am cleaning the old girl when she looks around and says what are you going to do with all this stuff ... I just say it will come in use one day .. { even though it probably won`t , Lol } ... like I said a Bloody disease .

Looks like the mustang vintage sport tourer. Mine is due here from m&m on Tuesday. I sat on a friend's one and it was so comfy compared to my lepera barebones I had to have one.

Shopping with m&m was awesome as I have come to expect. Cheaper than anywhere else, great service and delivered to my door in one week, in fact one day earlier than advised. Haven't had time to fit the seat and my other goodies yet but planning eight hours of riding over the weekend so the new mustang seat will get a workout.

Im looking at the Mustang Regal Duke extra wide. from M&M. LaPera bare bones Up Front, pushes rider forward a couple inches tho dont look has much depth/cushioning on seat. Man theres so many different one out there and not being able to try them out but just judging thru specs and pics makes it very hard.

I've got the lepera barebones as my sleek around town seat. And my new mustang seat is for longer trips and touring. Takes 2 secs to change over.

The left fuel 'cap' is a guage, and doesn't come out like the right one does. Night trains are the best looking softail, congratulations on your new bike. Try to keep those front spokes clean, they will rust fast.

Thanks Hooky, have already replaced both caps with flush mounts. Ive done quite a few things to the bike as far as add ons go. Also got the Mustang Vintage Solo with Backrest and pillion seat and fender bib from M&M. Quick deliver, all good, spent a few bob but what the heck. Will update pics one day soon.  Oh also my wheels are smooth wheel option so front spokes I believe are made of better material then regular and so far clean as a whistle ie no rust. But yes am aware of rust on regular spokes/front wheel.

Heres my list of parts bought, might interest NT owners what bits to get.
