Oil levels after service

I have just finished replacing the engine and transmission oil in my 2010 Ultra. Rode the bike to warm it up, drained both fluids and then replaced oil filter on the engine oil and filled both transmission and engine oils with 3.3 ltrs and .95 ltrs as detailed in the service manual. Rode the bike again and then checked both while hot. Both over full. Drained approx 200 ml out of engine oil till it reached the full when hot mark on the dipstick. Drained approx 75ml out of the transmission but still not sure if it is on the full mark on the dipstick or a touch full - the oil is very hard to see on the dipstick. Anyone have any pointers?

Are you checking the oil level with the bike on the side stand?

RedJLHTK,     It can be a bit confusing , on side stand or upright, hot and cold checking, and there is always old oil left in the motor, but how much !!

I have a tourer similar to yours , this is what I do, it may help.

Every thing that follows is done on side stand,

Bike is at operating temp,   (Check oil levels are at recommended levels on dipsticks before dropping oils)

Let idle for approx 2 minutes. (This allows max oil to drain to Sump) .                                                                                                                                                                                                          Turn bike off , and wait approx 5 minutes.  (Cools off a bit , and lets any oil drain down)

Drain engine oil into clean container.  (So you can check oil for any nasty bits,  Some people even put a strong magnet through oil to check  for any nasties)

    Remove Old Oil Filter

Let drain for amout of time that no drops are coming from drain plug,  ( The last little bit is were the nasties may come out if you have any nasties in there)

Pour oil in container into a measuring container and measure,  (Will say it measures 2.9 ltrs)

Clean and install engine drain plug with new O ring

Install new oil filter.  (Dab a film of oil aroung oil filter seal.  I fill oil filter with oil. )

Measure 2.8 ltrs of new engine oil , and pour into engine fill point.  (Check oil level, it could show a bit low, just make sure it's at least three quarter full)

Ride , and get upto recommended operating temp.

Check level , and if required fill to full.  It should only require approx 2-300 ml to get to the full mark , ( Some have level below full, (at hot), because of oil blow out of Air Cleaner).

Transmission Oil as above,   But normally just drop oil and  replace with recommended amount and check level after ride.

Fuck me , and this was going to be a short reply !!!!

One other thing I like doing is , get the old oil filter and cut the end off, (with small grinder) , to check if any nasties are caught in the filter . Let you see if any problems may be down the road .

    Cheers .

Thanks mate, the reply is much appreciated. When you say bike is at operating temp, a short ride, 10 - 15 min?
