1973 sportster legal and rego in VIC

Hi all,  Long time reader first time poster.  Finally got myself my first Harley so its about time.

I've rebuilt a few old Hondas in the last few years and this is my first rebuild on a Harley.  Just got it fired up for the first time so I figure I need to start thinking more seriously about what direction to go in from here.

After a lot of time reading and searching ive found a little info but most of it seems to be related to ICVs or newer bikes.  I'm looking for info regarding RWC and rego for the 1973 sportster in VIC with regards to things like indicators, hand controls, noise level limits, carb choices etc etc etc.  Ill list a few basic questions to start off with and see if anyone can help?

Do I need indicators?  I think ive read that pre 1974 bikes don't but im still worried about rocking up to the mechanic for RWC without any?

What hand controls do I need and are there limits to where I can place buttons?   Old style Harley switch for hi/low on the bars and not sure on the run/off switch yet.  Can it be a small toggle switch on the bars?  Is it legal to have the starter work off the key like a car ignition?  I have a modern sport bike master cylinder and plain clutch lever so I don't want to run the big Harley switch blocks etc.

Ive adapted a modern sport bike Japanese caliper to the front disc and used the matching master cylinder with an approved braided brake line.  Is this all ok?  The stock banana looks like a nightmare.

I read on the forums somewhere that hand grips and foot pegs must be 50% rubber, does this apply to a bike this old?

Can I run any carb as its pre pollution gear year?  I have a CV I got it running on but also have the stock bendix and im thinking about trying to build it with a SU, would any of these choices matter with regards to RWC?

I know the headlight and brake light need to be marked 'E' so that's all easy.  Is there a limit to the size of the brake light?  I'm pretty sure it cant be run on the side it must be centred.  Lisence plate must be in the middle, chain guard must be on, fender to the end of the tire etc etc is all fine.

Another issue is bolt on hardtails, I have the complete stock rear end but also a hardtail.  Ive read conflicting information regarding these, some say they had no trouble with RWC and some say they need engineering.  Does it make any difference with bolt on hardtail if I was to get club rego rather than full rego?

I know that's a lot of questions to start with, im just worried about spending all this time and money wiring up the bars with internal wire and micro switches only to find out I need stock hand controls or something like that.

Thanks in advance for any help you can think of!

    Aaron

it would be safer with blinkers  but then again the aftermarket chopper one's are pretty small & would not rely on a stuff car driver too see them , for that reason my 1974 sporty has no blinkers, no speedo , only a gennie & oil pres light  up front , horn & light only

In vic you do not need blinkers, or front brake brake light, only 1 rh mirror req and noise limit is not as strict on a pre 74,ask around before you take it in there are some good and some bad.

Im undecided on the indicators, just wanted to confirm that I don't 'need' them.

Im assuming I need a speedo? I thought that was definitely a requirement?

Contact Ian at VPW, they are (were?) a sponsor on here and Ian is a member with screen name Walka. He is a top bloke and very knowledagble when it comes to bikes and ICV's in Vic

Just a thought but if it doesn't need indicators then don't put them on until after registration.

If fitted they will have to comply with size and e mark requirements, and if the one you do fit are non compliant then it's an overall fail, whereas not having them at all will pass.

Thanks for snapping the pic mate. Interesting bike, at first glance looks Japanese in that style.

I was thinking the same thing about the indicators, if I decide to run them ill fit them after so the position and design wont matter too much.

thanks for the info Dave. Ill give them a call about a few details. Ive got the stock swingarm and shocks etc so I can bolt all that on for RWC no worries so I don't need an engineer specifically. Also, im near Essendon and don't have a trailer or van so it has to be somewhere I can ride to locally. Bought it home in pieces in my wagon.

Its been last registered in NSW about 7 years ago I think, I have the rego sticker and old plate.

Interesting! Not by thing personally but a good job, looks like it belongs in there. That tank and seat dwarfs the motor.

Looking at buying some switches at the moment. Is it ok to have it start off the key instead of a button on the bars?
