Return of the dreaded check engine and battery light.

Recently I had the check engine and battery lights come on on my 2010 Sportster Iron. After taking it to the local dealership I was informed that it had a bad regulator and stator. After spending around $840 for parts and labour the problem was fixed.... Or so I thought. Today after riding for about 20 minutes the check engine and battery lights came back on aswell as my fuel light while stopped at traffick lights. The fuel light wasn't a shock as I needed fuel. Proceeded riding and the battery light went off quickly followed by the engine light going add aswell? This pattern of them coming on and off continued another 3 times in the next 40 minutes or so of riding on the freeway. Eventually made it to a petrol station and fueled up. Rode for another 20 minutes and in this time the check battery and engine lights didn't come on again? What does this mean? What could the problem be? I'm going back to the dealership first thing tomorrow morning as I wasn't happy with there service the first time I went there. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Nah the recall was only on the 2012 models to my knowledge. The work was done at the new Harley Heaven in Ringwood, all my past work that I have had done there has been great but after my last encounter there I'm not impressed. It cost $40 over quote after u was specifically told it wouldn't cost a dollar more as they forgot to mention the gaskets the work required. They took over a week to even start on my bike. I was told it would be done by Friday as it should've been. It wasn't and I couldn't pick my bike up on Saturday as they had decided to close there workshop to prepare for there 'grand opening' night despite the manager saying to call him on Saturday, when I rang bright and early I was told he was t in today and the service department wasn't open.. I was left with no transport for another weekend. Got my bike home and looked over it. There was multiple chips on the same spot on my upper belt guard, chipping on around the bold on my starter cover and they had rounded one of the bolts on my inspection cover which I had to get them to replace. They tried to tell me that they couldn't see how they chipping on the upper belt guard could have been caused by them but I know for certain it wasn't like that when my bike went in as I baby it and wash it nearly every second week lol. I've paid $800 for a problem that hasnt even been resolved. For all i know i might not have even needed to get a new stator or regulator? So tomorrow morning should be interesting, I'm not in the best mood at the moment.

I'm hoping its just an annoying fault and nothing more as it seems to not be affecting performance but I'd hate it to bite me in the ass later on and not to mention that I've already paid over $800 already for what I was told was the cause of this issue only for it to still be happening... Finding it hard to enjoy going for a ride when I've got a yellow and red warning lights staring at me from the speedo.

Recently I was waiting at lights on my 08 Street Bob. When I got the green light I put her into first and the engine cut out. Thinking I had let the clucth out too soon while holding on the front brake lever I tried restarting her but she would start. I looked at the readout on the screen just under the speedo and it said "side stand". However the side stand wasn't down at all.

I had to push my bike thru the lights and up onto the pavement, where I phoned for breakdown recovery. A guy from AA showed up and reckoned it was a side stand sensor switch issue. He tried resolving the issue but ended up running my battery down in the attempt. He didn't have a trailer so he called in another AA guy who did and this second guy went thru the same drill, before loading my bike onto his trailer. It was three hours from the time of the breakdown to the time I finally got home with my bike. The garages wetre closed by the time the AA got a trIailer out.. As well as the bike cutting out and giving out that "side stand" message the check engine light would come on and stay on until the run switch was killed and the ignition turned off.

I went onto an American Harley forum and found that a British guy had a similar problem. The American guys told him that over there they don't have side stand sensor switches. I contacted the guy to ask if my problem sounded similar to the one he had and he replied that it did and that his problem was sorted out by a mechanic at his local dealership, who fixed his bike in less than a hour. It turned out to be a faulty positive connection.

When I had my bike looked at the mechanic charged my battery up for 3 days and when he put it back in the bike started as normal. The check engine light now comes on for about 3 seconds, then goes off and then comes back on for maybe 10 more seconds. It then goes off again and stays off.

However I now have another problem. I was cleaning my air filter this morning when I noticed that there was oil all over the air filter itself and inside the cover. I reckon my bike is due a full service but I also think that those inbuilt computer gadgets they are putting onto our bikes are a disaster. On my bike it obviosly mistook a low battery for a side stand sensor switch problem. The Brit guy on the other forum also had a similar problem with the computer telling him his side stand was down when the real issue was a faulty positive connection at the battery.

    Modern technology again.

That's some story mate. I'm not great mechanically all I know is I as told what the issue was and paid good money to get it fixed, I got crazy service, a big bill, small chips and damage to the my bike and the same issue happening again two weeks and $800+ later. I'm filthy about this. I'll be getting this sorted tomorrow and some form of compensation or I'l be taking matters further.

They are the same everywhere. And to make matters worse.....is it just me or is it the case that whenever you get/have to get replacement parts, the replacements are of inferior quality to the parts you had on your bike when it was new? I have a suspicion that they put American made qualityt parts onto the bikes during the production process.....but that when you buy replacements they sell you cheaper made merchandise from sweatshops in Asia? Of course not at a cheap price.

They went over it today and said something about it being a reminder code or something like that and that they have cleared the code? They checked all the plugs ect. Ridden it and said it hasn't come up again? I'm guessing that it was triggered by my fuel light coming on for the first time since I had a new regulator and stator installed. Fingers crossed it was just some type of glitch that has been cleared now?

Gday Wolf man, What did they say about your chips? Did they at least offer you some fish to go with them? Nah serious, did they do anything about that issue? cheers.

Haha nah they didn't offer anything except putting some touch up paint on it  which I could just to myself.... They said it looked like it had been hit up to 15 times on the same spot and they couldn't imagine how there worker could have done that with the job he was doing. I'm guessing the monkey didn't realise he was smacking the belt guard with the handle of his tool while trying to get the bolt of my starter cover off. So yeah it was shit service. They have a shiny and massive  brand new workshop with maybe 4 or 6 people working in it, half of them look like kids and a brand new office area with more people working/sitting in there on computers and they haven't even go anywhere for customers to sit while they wait for there bikes. Pretty disappointing. I'd recommend just going to the city Harley Heaven, they are always friendly and helpful and know there shit. I know I'll be going there in the next week or two to fit my new Bassani 2-1 Road Rage Exhaust, I'm not trusting my bike with unfriendly, unprofessional monkeys that like to rob you again.

    Not satisfying is it.
I had a similar experience with the car a couple of months ago. Nearly a 3yo car with only 1 little mark on it and it went in for a week to try and find a recurring warranty problem, when it came back it had five extra scuffs and marks and 1 scratch thru to the undercoat. Not going there anymore and fixed it myself cause I couldn't be bothered with there lame ass excuses. Good service IS very hard to find these days. Cheers
