48 Ape's

     Hi Guys,

I'm busy working out a parts order and I'm stuck on what Ape hangers to get. I don't want something too large, esspecially on a 48 because the bike is so low profiled I think it would cheapen the style of the bike.

I'm finding it hard to get some decent photos so I can see what they actually look like on the bike.

I'm more or less going for a level shoulder height, and something which suits the bike, just can't seem to put my finger on what bar I want. Any suggestions, please include a link to a photo or something so I can see what it looks like.

(Note: I'm buying a new Nightster tank soon so this will also give the front end a little visual lift, so not sure if I need any sorta tank lift to make it look ok or not with the apes, include your thoughts)

I don't think any ape hangers will 'cheapen' the style of your bike. The age old method is to sit on your bike with your eyes closed and your arms out and put them where it is comfortable. Get someone to measure that and away you go............visit a Harley dealership, they'll have bikes similar to your no doubt with ape hangers so have a sit on those. There are quite a few options to look at on Google images, have a dig around.

Being new to the scene, I don't want to walk into a crowd of harley owners and have a conversation every time about how a 48 is supposed to be drag bar only and I should have bought a Nightster or Iron if I wanted to go the Ape Hanger route.

I really like the Nightsters actually, I just think forward controls is a must have, it's so not the same sitting with your feet planted straight down, I love sitting back on the bike, almost like I've taken my lounge chair for a spin. In saying that I do love my 48 as well, I just think it would be much nicer if the bar was a move comfortable position for longer rides.

I'm around 5ft11 and thinking something around the 10"-12" mini ape would be nice. I was originally looking at perhaps the RSD Vintage but after looking at some other bars on google images, I'm liking more and more the new Harley Davidson Chizeled Handle bar, which I think is only 8.3inch rise, or perhaps a WO612 CHUBBY® 12" OUTLAWZ bar.

I'm thinking anything longer than 12" will start going above shoulder height, so I'll probably end up just going with the HD Standard 12inch Ape Hangers, they also look quite nice imo.

I just want to make sure I get the look right, I've seen similar apes put on a Nightster, and a tank riser and it looks amazing, then I've seen a photo of the same done to a 48 and it looks f'ing horrible.

So just hoping someone could throw me a photo of their beast with something similar done that I'm describing with the part they fitted. I'd be very keen to check it out.

Stevo, the seventy two is a sportster with forwards and mini apes, straight from the factory. The only difference to your forty eight is the fat front tyre. So, how about going to the dealer and trying out a seventy two? It should give you an idea of fit and style. Cheers, TC

Steveo I think your bike looks sweet just the way it is mate. All I'd be doing is swapping out the intake & grabbing a good tuner.

    Slap.

     Hey Slapster :)

Ta for the response btw :)

The beast has already had a stage 1 air intake installed and a remap to balance out the V&H exhaust so it wasn't running lean on me :)

Ta for the feedback Smokeweazel and 5ltrFreak, yeah I gotta agree, went out and stat on a few bikes as TC883 suggested, couldn't find any 72's on the day but found some other bikes, found the 16" was so pimp, felt really good.

I just want to make sure if i get big apes that i get whatever else i need done to the bike to make it look the goods. If i need a tank raise ill get one, whatever I need to.

I've seen a few slap on a 21" front wheel with the apes and it looks amazing but depending on the cost that might have to wait for now.

So now to choose a style:

    RSD?

    Burleigh?

    Wild1 Chubby's?

any others you guys know of?
