given the results are from yesterday which was after the initial tuning attempt a couple of weeks ago you still got 8 ftlb and 20 hp increase. Wonder what the original values would have been before you put the cams in? Been a bit of stuffing about but you would have to be happy with the increase. You can see how it was falling on it's ass at 4200 and now keeps climbing to 5800

Good stuff Ian ... sorry about your Dad ... I`m getting Fred to install some S & S 583`s in next couple of weeks on my 2008 Fsxtc .. { if I can tie him down , Fark he is one busy little bugger , Lol } .. I have a set of Freedom Shorty`s and a S & S Hi Flow Air filter and a Power Commander 5 on at this stage ... he set up the PC 5 for me and got a reading of 80 Hp ... will be courious to see what type of improvement with Cams installed .

Main area I want improvement in is mid range , I`m happy with bottom end grunt and I`m no boy racer any more but just want that little bit more punch when cruising in the mid range ... my eyes are not what they used to be but does your print out read 10.6 comp ... what was yours in standard trim .

Gidday Ando , what Cam did you have in mind ... the 583`s are generally recognised as a midrange Cam and are advertised as such ... is there something I should know ... always open to ideas .

When I say midrange I am talking in the 80 K to 120 K area when cruising ... am I using the right terminology .

Thanks Ando ... always good to hear different opinions ... did you feel you lost any reliability by shaving the heads and raising the comp ... last thing I want to do is worry about reliability issues ... how was the heating or over heating situation after raising comp ... would you recommend oil cooler

Will definitely talk to Fred { the tech who is installing and doing the Dyno } about your suggestions .

Gidday again Ando or anyone else for that matter ... hopefully not to stupid a question but in regards to the 583 S&S cam dropping off after the 4800 to 5000 rpm mark ... what type of speeds are we talking about ... for example if I am cruising in 5th gear on my 2008 Fsxtc at around 100 to a 110 K`s what type of revs is the bike running at ... just ball park figures .

What does a stock 2008 Softail rev to any way ... I suppose I should know that but I am afraid I don't ... if they rev comfortably to 7500 revs then I get what you mean about the 583`s dropping off after 5000 revs but would I be right in presuming that even though the cams drop off this doesn't mean the old girl is going to go back wards does it , it just means I would have to shift up the gears sooner to get maximum benefit .

Real keen to get yours or anyone else's opinion on this as I find it real interesting ... if anyone is coming in late on this thread I have a 2008 Fsxtc , just wanting a little boost in the lower to mid range ... I already have a set of Freedom shorty`s , a S&S hi flow air filter and stealth cover and a PC 5 that has been dynoed here in Brisbane with a result of 80 HP .

Was thinking of the whole head porting and bigger cube path but a shit load more dollars involved , Lol ... hence the quest for a little boost from a set of Cams ... anyhow post away guys , love to hear any ideas .

drop into GA and go for a test ride on a new one with tacho. Not sure about your gearing so cant help much but around 6000 will be the rev limiter maybe a few hundred more or a few hundred less.

Thanks guys ... had a chat to Fred { Technician / Mechanic } doing the job , his information is that my Softail will be a 6200 rev limit and while he agrees with Ando that the 583`s are not the best Cam for high end horse power the fact that I have scored the S & S Cams at such a good price ... Brand New with Gaskets and better bearings for $300 ... then I would be crazy not to go with them given the information I gave him which was just wanting that little bit extra from take off up through the gears through to mid range .

Seriously not interested .. { at this point , Lol } .. in big top end figures , if I wanted to cruise at a 160 K`s and risk loosing the old license then I would have kept my old 1400 GSK ... sometime down the track I might look at the whole raising the compression and doing the heads and going a bigger or different Cam with a bigger cube increase as well but for the time being it is all about enjoying the ride with that little bit of extra punch .

When I first got the Softail it felt so restricted I thought I had made a mistake going the Whole Harley route but after putting on the pipes and air filter and having Fred install the PC 5 and coaxing 80 HP out of her it has made the journey so far quite enjoyable and with the Cams going in next week with some Progressive suspension front and rear and one of those M6 Hayden Primary Chain adjusters for supposedly better gear changes and longer bearing life then that might do me for awhile , motor wise .. { the Missus hopes so , Lol } .. still have a couple of cosmetic changes I want to make such as a set of decent forward controls but they will come with time .

So thanks for all the advice and would still love to hear anyone`s opinions as I find the subject quite interesting ... cheers all , Tim .
