HELP - Extended Gas Tank - 2011 Forty Eight

    Hi Guys,

Really need some help and advice on getting a replacement gas tank for the 48. I want to go on a bit of a trip at the end of the year from Brisbane - Sydney - Canberra - Melbourne, and the Peanut 2.4 Gal tank just will not cut it. At the moment i get about 100KM before the fuel light comes on, and ive pushed it out to about 112km without the bike going dry so I'm assuming it's around 120km max per tank.

I really would like to double this capacity, but I'm worried about the wrong 'shape' tank ruining the aesthetics of the bike. I've spoken to a few EBAY stores in the US, and the best i could find was a 3.2 Gal tank, which brings her up from about 8L to about 12L. For the price though I'm assuming I'll only get another 50km per tank if that.

I think ideally I'd like to get at least 200-250km per tank.

Has anyone else done a conversion and do you have any links to a buyer for me to source a tank that looks good on the 48?

I saw a YT vid a while back of a 4.5gal (17L) Superlow(?) tank on a 48, all colour matched, had a few other small changes to the bike, looked sweet.

    Slap.

For a trip like that you'd really want the biggest tank you can get

    Sporty Custom around 17L

Can you guys recommend anything on Ebay that you think would fit?

I've thought I might try and speak to some local custom bike shops and see if they can't help me out, from sourcing the tank to prep+prim+painting the tank and fitment.

I want a healthy compromise, I will be sticking to the coastal routes to site see along the way so I shouldn't stray too far from gas stations, but at the same time I don't want to have to top-up 10 times between Brisbane/Sydney alone just to get there.

I think any tank which gets me 200-250km would be sufficient for what I need.

So 4.5 galon gas tank gives approx 250km

Righto that sounds about right for what i need then.

Now to find the right one to straight bolt on to my 48.

Anyone know a good shop in Brissy who I could source for this work at a good price?

17L Custom tank should see the light come on about 200kms and reach 250-300? I haven't found out yet. I don't think it really suits the 48 but a good compromise might be a Nightster tank. There should be plenty of fuel available if going via the coast. I think all sportster tanks have the same mounts, so should be easy to change over.

if your tune is good a nightster/iron tank will get you 200 around town and 250 on the freeway, This includes a 48 with said tank.

Fuel at least every 80ks if going via the New England. Biggest leg would be the 150ks between Tamworth and Muswellbrook, but there is plenty of fuel available if travelling by day.
