V&H Big Radius Questions

     Hi Guys,

Going to test ride a couple of bikes tomorrow and when I finally put my hard earned down I would like to have Reaper Chrome Wheels and Vance & Hines Big Radius (2 into 2) Chrome pipes fitted. I'm pretty sure my bike of choice will come from the Dyna range, the Super Glide Custom is on the short list at this stage

(Q1) what other costs are involved in fitting these items? I was told by a Harley dealer recently a Softail Standard 103cm needs a new sports air filter and some kind of chip before they will work.

(Q2) Are the Big Radius really loud because I live in a neighbourhood with lots of whingers?

(Q3) Would these be better to be bought independantly (maybe imported from US) and have them fitted myself?

    Cheers and thanks.

Are the Big Radius really loud because I live in a neighbourhood with lots of whingers? LOL, just read this in another thread. If you don't want loud, leave it stock.

Ask them to throw in the pipes to seal the deal? Good luck with the shopping.

A2. - Big radius 2:2 are also known as the BIG RACKET. They are obnoxiously loud. Your neighbors wil hate them.

On a positive note you will be heard and if you like the look you can get quiet baffles for them (Highly recommended).

Oh and keep the stock pipes, so when you get called for an EPA test you can put them back on.

Hey mate, Big Radius 2 into 2 are a great looking pipe & sound even better! They are loud but can be riden conservatively to keep the noise down, you fill find that on start up they are a bit  loud as the automatic choke (if it's called that on EFI) will make the bike idle higher until warm..

You' ll need a heavy breather (high flow air filter) & a tuner ie: Sreamin Eagle Race Tuner, Thundermax etc as you will need the EFI tuned to the pipes & heavy breather, if you don't it will run like shit & probably fuck your motor! For pipes, heavy breather & tuner depending on your shop will cost you around $2,000 fitted, I'd be trying to get them thrown in with the deal when you buy your bike. You're not going to save on pipes getting them from the states as freight will be expensive, you may save on the heavy breather & tuner though.

Good luck finding your new ride!

I have tried both reputable types of baffles that supposedly quieten down these pipes (big city thunder and smatpartz) and neither quieten the pipes sufficiently. In my view they are useless and a waste of money, those 'quiet' baffles that is. The people that suggest them usually haven't tried them

I've also used the SmartPartz Hard Kore Quiet Baffles on my Big Radius 2 into 2's. I found they did quieten the pipes down a little bit but they made my bike run like shit! With the right tune to suit the baffles I'm sure it'd run ok though..

I personally wouldn't recommend these baffles as they're not going to quieten the pipes down to what I think you're after.. I say fuck your neighbours & get them! Just warm it up in your garage & don't flog the shit out of it leaving & returning to your place..

They're going to be loud mate. Spero is right, the baffles don't quieten them much at all, just take a bit of the "bark" out of the pipes and help with the decel 'pop'.

WE want we want we want.  Please don't get me wrong here as only good advice is intended. I have held off replying to all your posts, but this is my suggestion to you.

The most logical choice for you to make old crookneez Is to buy a bike you like, after riding and sitting to find what suits you the best, (some bikes will fit you better than others) for the best price you can get and leave all the extras and bling for a later time.

You have never had another bike apart from your scoot so why dont you start at the begining with your new bike when you get it, leave it stock,  learn to ride it properly and confidently.

Along the road of learning, you will meet other riders, go on group rides, you can check out their rides and see and hear for yourself what you do and don't like.

Why does everthing have to be done now before you even have the thing? You are asking every question on this forum about every part on the bike as you are a newbie, noted and nothing wrong with that but you will end up with a bike with this bit suggested by fred and that bit suggested by bill, and the other bits suggested by joe. Get my drift?

At the end you might get a shock as all those bits might not work or look good together. Maybe they will.

Like i said, no offence intended in this post, and i repect the fact that you are wiser, (read older) than me, but i truly think you should just get a bike and enjoy it for what it is, and for what it can offer you, and after a while you know what you want without asking sooooo many variables.

I know this thread was about big radius pipes, in which my reply is yes, they are very loud and will upset all your posh neigbours. Go down to the local dealer on any saturday and hear for yourself.

Do they sound good, Hell yeah but we cant have everything now can we.

When all is done and said, it is your choice and your money, but you do ask us for our opinions so this was just mine.

Thanks for the reply Crookneez, I hear what your saying but I think that you must be a very fit and
Confident bloke to take on the challenges in the first place. I am thinking that you will be at least riding for another
Ten years at least. In my experience, it hasn't taken me more than two years to complete a bike with all the gear on that I wanted.
That's why I suggested to slow down a tad cause I feel you do have heaps of time for riding left.
You will get conflicting advice on exhaust requirements. What no one can argue with is the fact if you just want exhaust only,
do that and get the shop to put the gas analyzer up the pipe, to read the gases, and that will determine whether or not you need the tuner or not. I did that with my muscle. Just pipes and a k&n filter, had it analyzed, and it was within the specs so didn't need the tuner.
Yours may or may not but at least this way will tell you.

I have a V&H Big Radius 2x2 on my Fatboy and it was so loud that it was giving me headaches on longer rides. I got my mechanic to knock up a pair of quiet baffles and while it is still loud, the harsh ear-splitting bark on open throttle is gone.
You will definitely need to be careful with the throttle in city areas - you can cruise by on low throttle openings without attracting too much unwanted attention from the noise Nazis.
Yes, it is LOUD on starting up - so, I open my garage door only after the bike has warmed up and the idling quietened down!

I tend to agree with FLHuTChU.  sounds like you have picked out what pipes and wheels you want and now have to find a bike to put them on?

if you change the pipes it will be loud. simple.

Hi Crookneez . I have a 2011 dyna superglide custom with screaming eagle  heavy breather , vance & hines big radius pipes and screaming eagle race tuner. To say that I am happy with this combination would be an understatement. They are a tad loud but as long as you dont ride around like a tool and attract attention I dont think you will get too much grief. I rode mine from Campbelltown NSW to Bundaberg a while back without getting harrassed about noise  but I have to say they aint exactly quiet. My next addition to my bike will be reaper wheels also as I am already over the spoked wheels and the crap chroming on the spokes ...the only complaint that I have in regards to the bike though
