I'm looking at installing a GPS tracking device to help locate my bike in the instance it gets stolen. I've done some basic research into these units, it seems they rely on the old 2G mobile network to send the data back to either a website of the product, or to a smart phone. My concern is that this network isn't much good unless you're in a metropolitan area which I'm not, will this make the unit useless if the bike's not in a 2G network area?
I'd really like to hear if anybodies using one of these units & they're opinion of it? There also seems to be a massive price difference between units, ranging from $50 through to $500 with what seems to be not much technological difference between units... Any input would be greatly appreciated..
Spero..
Ya don't need to pay much more than $120.00 to get a device that does it all.
Hard wired with it's own battery backup is the hardest feature to find.
$60.00 a year for Telstra Long tem pre-paid SIM is the cheapest way to go and most coverage.
And you're correct, out of range and device doesn't work.
Forgot to mention, make sure the device has the perimeter/fence feature,
that way tou can set the perimeter/fence at a small setting and as soon as the device is moved it sends an alert,,, ya don't have to wait untill ya find the bike missing.
Cell phone in the pocket lets you know what's happening all the time that both are in mobile covered areas.
You guys obviously never seen the discounts on insurance premiums for having one fitted ?
Thanks for your info Rider, it gives me a good place to start. I found this unit at Jaycar online & thought it seemed pretty good, can I get your opinion of it please?

Insurance, what a fucking joke that is! My bike is insured & always will be, the problem being it's impossible to find an insurance company that even comes close to insuring my bike for what it's worth, not to mention the time I've spent on it & the one off parts I've made..
If the units small enough it can be mounted in a place that isn't easily accessable, I agree that an experienced thief will be looking for one of these units, at least it gives you a small window of opportunity to find your bike before they find the tracking unit..
Cheers for your input & opinions guys..
Cheers for the info Rider, I really appreciate it! As you say I'm sure I could find a cheaper unit online but more hassles if it's faulty.
My insurance is due at the end of the week so I'll be seeing if my current insurer (NRMA) will give me a discount with the GPS tracker fitted, if not I'll be giving QBE & Swann a call.
Thanks again mate for your helpful info, Spero..
