Question on Bars

Mate, your Sporty looks to be a late model judging from the air cleaner in the picture, so I'm assuming the wiring is similar to my 06 Superglide. I've just put new bars on and did the internal wiring myself. Its relatively easy, if you take your time. The hardest bit was pulling the wire bundles through the bars and pushing connectors back together under the frame backbone. Best way is to do it leaving the wires connected at the switch blocks the whole time, feeding them back down the bars from there to where they connect back up under the tank. Also if you go for higher risers and wider bars, obviously you might want to think about a longer clutch cable and a braided brake line, because if you have the stock metal tube /rubber brake line it may not be long enough. Your accelerator cables might still be long enough but will hang lower if the bars are wider than stock.

If you don't get bars pre drilled with the wiring holes, you can do it yourself but make sure you file all the hole edges real clean - use wet & dry as well so that no sharp bits remain. Not sure where the wiring connectors are on Sportys but on the Dyna I undid the fuel tank, moved it back on the frame about 6 inches, which gives you access to the Deutsch style wiring connectors under the backbone. Once you undo the connectors, take a pic of the wiring in the connector or make a digram so you know which colour wire goes in which hole. Then you can pull the individual wires out of the connector and back up towards the bars. The indicators will be a seperate wire but the theory is the same.

Easiest way to pull the wire bundle through the new bars is suck some dental floss through the bar holes first with a vaccuum cleaner, then tie some fishing line to the floss and pull that through, and then attach the fish line to the wire bundle. Lube the black vinyl covering on the wire bundle up with a dry lube so its easier to pull through. You might find it easier to pull the wires through without the vinyl covering on which won't matter too much, but leave som of the covering on for wher the wires exit underneath the bars and go back into the frame. I managed to get the indicator wires going into the bars from inside the switch block, just above the indicator housings. Makes it look neater.

good luck and remember, take your time!
