i changed the 3 oils in my 2002 fatboy the other day and i noticed i put too much engine oil in. there is small specks of oil around the filller cap and tank. i will take a little bit out now(2 rides later). does this cause  any problems apart from the obvious specks that i can see? its about 1/2 an inch over the full mark when hot. cheers

Over filling the oil tank won't blow any seals. The oil is gravity fed into the pump and then circulated through the motor. From there it is returned to the tank via the pump. You might find the tank gets oil on the outside due to leaning the bike when riding.

Yeah, I was surprised to note that when I actually read my manual, the line on my oil dip stick just indicates minimum level....too much and it just overflows and makes a mess.

cheers dyno the mistake i made was filling it to the full mark when cold.  the oil must expand when it gets hot i reckon.

Beaglebasher a handy thing to buy is one of those transmission gear fluid pumps. I have made the mistake of putting to much oil in the tanks and they make life a whole lot easier than having to drop the drain plug . Just put the tube of the pump into the tank and pump out what you have to. Also handy for draining the fuel tank if you have to take it off. Doesn't get all the fuel but 99%.

aj, i went to the local auto shop looking for what your talking about but all they had was a 500ml syringe with a small diameter hose attached. they wanted 15bucks for it. i would rather suck it out with my garden hose and risk the mouthful of oil than pay for cheap shit like that. ps i have scottish heritage

I always tip 3 quarts in when dropping my old oil and changing the filter as per the owners manual then take for a run then check and adjust if necessary to hot level.

Check cold level next morning.Mine is a tc88 dyna model which is checked resting on the sidestand.I believe softies are checked in the upright position.
