A bit of help needed.
2002 sportster 883 (1200)
Problem - bike runs for about 10 mins then stops and won't start unless you leave it for awhile, if you leave it about 10 mins it will runs but only for about 3-4 hundred meters (takes a long time to get back from the shops)
ive checked fuel, it's got heaps and its even squirting fuel into the carb but still won't start. (Rules out low fuel, fuel blockage.......)
Ignition module, works because I can see the led light blinking when the bike turns over. Timming must be good cause when she runs real good.
There is one problem maybe and it's the VOES, when the bike is running (at idle) if I take the vacuum hose off the carby it changes the idle speed. Which is good right?
when idling if I unplug the VOES plug from the harness, nothing changes. Is it a Brocken switch?
the other check is the dyna 2000i ignition module instructions state that if the VOES is working correctly there should be a green led light on. I don't.
So I'm buying a new VOES switch but it baffles me as to why would the voes switch have anything to do with the bike running for only 10 mins.
One other problem is when the bike refuses to start it does a big carb fart just before start up. This is my start routine, key in, switch on power. Turn fuel to on. Flick run/off switch to on (this is where the big carb fart comes in. Then hit the start button.
What I've noticed is that if it has a carb fart, it won't start. No fart, most of the time she will start.
Im very frustrated with it at the moment and can't think of anything else, any help or ideas would be good or an explanation as to the strange goings on would help me sleep easy at night.
I would say your on the right area with the ignition sounds like module or coil to me don't think it will be your voes they only retard or advance slightly at cruise or idle
buy memory and as for your big fart that could be because the cylinders have got fuel there and when you turn you switch on you get a bit of spark due
to position of the sensor which fires and burns the fuel ,and pulling the vacuum hose of your causing it to lean out/vacuum leak so the tune changes
Air cleaner is not blocked, it does the same with the air cleaner on or off.
After reading other forums and there are lots about this stuff I'm going to try another coil of my fatboy and see if that makes a difference.
sounds like the coil is breaking down when hot
Hey Dave,
my coil only .5 resistance between the smaller plugs, not the ones where the spark plug leads go.
Ive tested the coil on my barn find project and its the same, does that mean that both coils are had it?
Is it possible with .5ohms to start the bike and have it run for a few mins then have it shut its self down due to no spark?
So what's the resistance of the primary coil winding when it's hot ? any difference.
The coil on the sporty reads .5ohms and 10,000 on the primary and secondary. Reads the same hot or cold. I mean the same readings before the bike runs and after the bike shuts itself down the readings are the same.
What is freaky is that my old barn find fatboy which has been sitting in someone's shed for 6 years has a coil which reads exactly the same. Old owner said he did not know how to get it running so I have tried the coil on my sporty and the same thing happens. Starts, runs/idles for 7 mins now then stops. Bike then won't start for awhile. Plenty of fuel still squirting into the carb after it won't start.
Just seems strange that it acts like this, not making any sense.
the Dyna 2000i is o.k. as long as they are working the trouble is that they never work for that long always a problem ign, fit a new module + coil then you know were you are with her
