Hi guys, 98 fxd, just serviced, new S&S carb and pipes. New dékka battery, new spark plugs, new spark leads, half tank new fuel.

its trying to turn over but won't fire. I took a video but it won't download on here. It's chugging, then not firing. It's driving me batshit. Any help appreciated.

    cheers.

Have you done the normal checks. Fuel getting into the cylinders? Are the plugs wet? Are they sparking, It has to be one or the other...

    Here's my guesses.

Take a plug out after you've cranked it, plug should be wet with petrol. You might also smell it, but if you've been cranking a while, that smell may be coming from the carby...

You say the plugs are good, have you had one out (or used another) and cranked it while earthing the plug and getting an actual visual on the spark? Watch out not to ignite any fuel vapour coming out of an open plug hole!!

Make sure the new leads are the right way round, and fully home in their sockets..

Pulled a plug out, not wet as such, but wiped it with a towel nod it smelt of petrol....what does that mean ?

Is gas coming out of the accelerator pump nozzle? Reverse the sark plug leads as an experiment.

Are you getting spark when you ground the plug?

The tube from the carb has been leaking a bit if that's what you mean?

That's the overflow... Take the air cover off and twist the throttle... You should see a squirt of gas going into the manifold. If you do then at least gas s getting to the carb.

I hope so Dave, I was a bit shitty actually as I put brand new ones in it a few days before service, as I had just bought it and got a new battery and plugs straight away as it had been in storage for a year.
When I picked it up, new plugs, and new wires, the wires were in bad shape, but I had already ordered some flashy red ones from the states and he made some grey ones. In fairness I'm the only bloke in Oz without a Mobile, so he couldnt reach me.so as my 5 year old nephew told me, you get what you get and you don't get upset.
It's a good bike, I just feel stitched up, and don't want to go to the dealership at $135 ph for something that I really think is a bullshit wire or something....

So you have good spark, can you confirm fuel as was suggested have a look into the throat of the carby with the AC off, twist the throttle and you should get a jet of fuel. That is the pump operating.

If you are getting fuel and spark I would be looking at your leads, are they the right way around. Check for grounding/arching to the motor when cranking the engine.

Put the old plugs back in and try starting the bike again. Could be wrong plugs for the motor.

Thanks for all of the help guys. Squirted fuel into carb, got a few sparks and a half assed fire. I've got it lined up for a new cam etc. So will just drop it to the bloke and see what happens. All the wiring under the seat is old and looks pretty frail. Will bite the bullet and replace it all. It can't be much, but something. Def changed when the carb and service happened. Was going to sell it as I've got a bit saved up to pump into a choppaweeza import. But, mucking around with it, and reading heaps more bout the Evo will keep it. I can see myself getting a better understanding of it and being ble to work with it. Got it cheap, WAS running ok. I budgeted to spend 3 or so on it when I bought it....anything new I buy, I will prob gin around getting new bars etc anyway. Very grateful for all of the help guys. Cheers.

To me that sounded flooded, but I'm useless with mechs, I start mine without the choke and it works fine. (Choke tends to flood it a bit), I need to keep the throttle on a bit if I'm warming up, but around 1200 rpm or or so for 20 secs and its fine.
Only thing is its 15 years older then yours and thingz change.
