ATF wont hurt the clutch plates (think auto trans clutch plates). I have a customer that uses Redline ATF in his primary (dyna) and has no issues. For a sportster i'd be looking at using something else as ATF is a little on the thin side for the harley gear boxes. But to contradict myself im currently using Mobil 1 v-twin in my box/primary and its been great.

    Give it a go.

Nothing wrong with syn oil in the box/primary dude. I'm always trying different brands/types of oils in my bike, so far the Mobil 1 v-twin engine oil (syn) in the primary is going well, shits better and a little less "clunk". The only thing you need to be concerned with is if the oil you choose will damage the clutch plates and if any additives will "hurt" the bronze bushings....otherwise go for it and try it out.

i'am a bit older & slower these days  only  ,  fast on race days ( FORD ), atf is a bit hard too hold in the pri cover,  on the late bikes it's easier but on some earlier models when hot she can leak a bit here & there, you will have to change it quite often keep it fresh & clean as the chain will give it a hard time  , atf will not hurt the gears in the g/box , i use Penrite  ATF-33 for Drag Racing use
