Write Off???

Okay, this isn't my bike but in my job as a tow truck driver I picked this up last week.  The rider lost his leg but the family are just happy they didn't lose him.  They are asking if the bike will be written off or not and I'm not sure.

Damage is to tins and accessories and a fucking big hole where the gear selector used to be,  There is a scuff/scratch on the frame near that one of the blokes I work with reckons will cause it to be written off.

    Any opinions?

I would not have thought it to be a write off but I am certainly no expert. They could easily be in for 2-3 grand for repairs though depending upon where you source your parts from. Looks like the primary case took the major hit, which makes sense if its got laid down and slide a ways. I would get a dealer or Indy to do a proper assessment mate.

Thanks Chop, I don't think that the monetary value of the repairs mean that a write off is an option but the bloke that I work with here in WA is pretty sure that the scratch/scuff on the frame means its a sure thing to be written off...

In the current WA Harley market that bike could go either way

Only 6 to 7 years ago , the Ins Co got HUGE money for bent Harleys at auction

They were happy to "pay out" on the bike because they got sooo much for the wrecks at " damaged repairable" auctions

That meant as far as you were concerned your bike got "written off" and you got paid out , cost the Ins Co LESS that way !

Nowadays the price of bent Harleys has crashed since those days. Blame the economy , LOADS of Harleys on the market , US Imports etc etc

In this case then they may well repair the bike as it's worth shit at auction now. Probably not what this particular rider wants to hear sadly.

For him being paid out is probably the best outcome.

I know this from personal experience . In 1997 I was " head-on'd" by a P-Plater with 7 cunts in the car. On my 1995 Dyna. BROKE the forks off the bike
I was paid out by HIS Ins Co , and the wreck sold at auction for $15 K !!

More recently I was knocked off my 2006 Dyna from the left side by a 75 year old priest. Bike somersaulted , cosmetically scratched/dented every which way, bent forks etc etc
I wanted paid out on my " agreed value " policy , BUT the Ins Co opted to repair the bike as the wreck was worth shit at auction nowadays to them
The repair costs were nearly $14K , but cheaper to them than paying me out agreed value of $29K . They paid me the $14K as I have an ABN and I did the repair myself, Took 3 weeks to get it running , and 3 months to find most of the parts on US eBay.

Even at the end when the bike was 99.5% I would still rather have been " paid out " agreed value

PS To me, that black Streetbob looks fucked . That's a personal perspective born of background knowledge.

Thanks lads, the general consensus seems to be "no fucking idea" which is where we are at too.

We will just have to wait out the assessor, anyone know how quickly Swann's works?

    Cheers again,

    Norm

     hi,

i doubt if you see assessor, generally they send vehicle to pick-up bike which may come from a harley dealer or independent repair shop

if you rural i would give them call back to find out whats happening, once in "shop" they will assess

i tipped bike over in driveway $2800 from independent repair shop, harley dealer wanted over 5k they done first assessment then the assessor took to the shop that completed work for $2800

read your contract, must say if bike under dealer warranty they must use genuine parts for repair but can use recycled/salvaged genuine parts

    thanks

WOULDN'T they also have to put in jig to check if angle of forks true which means you must take front end out and send to place that could check that degreees of sterring head neck still correct with manufacturers measurements as to incline and degrees sideways are still true not out of plumb ,more to it than meets the eye and thats a big cost just to check all this ,so most will get written off coz its just not cosmetics here trust me been thru this ,yeah bike goe's good around right handers ,doesnt like lefts though ever had a bike like that ,there out there average rider wont no bike is shinny though looks good bla bla bla slitely bent frames in all brands are out there only a good rider will pik up somethoin aint rite SHINGLES

It'll only be a write-off if it's claimed. Make an offer.
